Resurrection Voices
Generosity

When recently asked to reflect on one of the Fruits of the Spirit, I chose generosity. I’m not sure what prompted me to select this particular “fruit,” but as I did some preparation, I think it’s probably a good and timely topic for our congregation.

Webster defines generosity as the quality of being kind, understanding and not selfish; the quality of being generous, especially willingness to give money and other valuable things to others.

As you would expect, the Bible offers numerous passages that speak to the topic, two of which I’ve included below:

2 Corinthians  9:6-7  - The point is this:  whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Romans 12:6-8  - Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

Some personal thoughts on generosity that relate to these verses:

•    I think most of us by nature want to be good and generous people.
•    Many of us give because we have been brought up to give. We begin learning as children by bringing our noisy offering – or, as we reminisced during a recent council meeting, our little two-part offering envelopes. I have very specific memories of contributions that were significant to my family as we grew up. I believe those form a foundation for my thoughts on giving today.
•    Generosity is not only giving money – sometimes that is very difficult, given our personal situations. We can be generous, however, by offering our time, talents and possessions. While our church certainly needs money to survive, we also depend on many people sharing their time and talent – teaching Sunday school or Vacation Bible School, singing in the choir, mowing grass, participating in highway cleanup, cooking Serenity Inns meals, or participating in other Week of Sharing activities. We are reminded to be cheerful givers. I laugh because when I had to complete three quilts for Serenity Inns before Christmas this year, I wasn’t very cheerful thinking of the deadline.  Seeing the faces of the recipients, however, made it all worthwhile!

God certainly calls us to be generous. When we are generous, we are doing God’s will – in response to God’s greatest gift of all received in our baptisms. When I think of generosity, I’m often reminded of a song we’ve sung in choir: “Lay up your treasures in heaven. Your treasure in this world will pass away, but the things of the Lord will last forevermore.” As we proceed through the next weeks and months here at Church of the Resurrection, I hope each of us will find ways to be generous, thereby laying up our treasures in heaven.

Lenten Worship Series
The Ten Commandments
Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.

Our God is a God of relationship. That’s why God created us—to be in a right relationship with him, with each other and with all of creation. Unfortunately, the pesky reality of sin entered the world and damaged all of the relationships which God intended to be healthy, strong and loving. The world, and everything and everyone in it, is broken—in one way or many.

We know that Christ’s death and resurrection ultimately reconcile us to God, restoring our relationship to the one God longs to have with his people. But God has also provided us with a set of rules for life meant to guard and protect these important relationships, so that they may be enjoyed as God intends.

We know these life rules as the Ten Commandments. Please join us each Wednesday evening, February 21-March 21 at 7 p.m.  Each week we’ll explore two of the Commandments. We’ll discover that the Commandments are not rules intended to spoil our fun or cramp our styles. Rather, they’re instructions from the One who created us and knows us best—instructions for living in right relationship with God and with each other—instructions that will lead us to the life God created us for.

I invite you to make mid-week Lenten worship a priority for you and your family. It’s a discipline which will enrich your Lenten journey and make your resurrection life more meaningful and joyful.

In Christ’s service,

- Pastor Kimberly

Bread of Life Community Meal
February 22, 4:30-7 p.m.

Come join our Confirmation students as they serve the Bread of Life Community Meal at St. Charles Catholic Church on February 22 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity for our congregation to come together to provide and serve this meal to needy families and seniors in our local area. The Human Concerns team has already placed grocery bags in the lobby requesting donations for the meal. Please grab one and fill it up! We estimate we will be feeding 125 people, so your generosity of donations as well as the gift of your time will go a long way in helping local families during these cold winter months.

A sign-up sheet is at the Welcome Desk with three shifts for setting up, serving, and clean up. Come join in the warmth of caring for our neighbors. If you have questions, please contact Cari Matter at 262-468-6146.  Thanks.

SOPHIA MOVIE NIGHT
Monday, Feb 26
6:30 p.m.
Church of the Resurrection

Join SOPHIA, Church of the Resurrection’s social justice group, as we see and talk about the movie “Halfway.” “Halfway” is the fictional story of a recently released convict (played by Quinton Aaron, best known for his role in “The Blind Side”) who faces the prospect of enduring ties with his old gang world. At the same time, he is struggling to adapt to a life on probation as the only black man in a rural white Wisconsin farm town. The film’s subject, Byron, finds himself halfway between childhood and assuming the full responsibilities of adult life, just as he is halfway between prison and freedom and, perhaps, only halfway to being considered a full human being.
Christ the King Lutheran Church, Delafield, to host a Beer & Hymns Event in conjunction with The Beer & Hymns Band from Church of the Resurrection, Pewaukee

Christ the King will host a hymn singing event at Beer Snobs Ale & Eats in Hartland, on Sunday, March 4, at 4 p.m. All are invited to join in this gathering of people who enjoy singing and community.

Beer & Hymns is designed to bring together people who like the idea of singing old-school hymns in a casual environment, while enjoying a beer, soda or bite to eat. Beer & Hymns isn’t a church service and won’t include preaching or proselytizing. Instead, it’s just a good old-fashioned singalong in an all-inclusive space for people from all walks of life. All are welcome, including families.

Beer Snobs Ale & Eats is located at 122 Cottonwood Ave in Hartland. Advance registration for Beer and Hymns is not required. For more information about the event, visit www.churchoftheresurrection.org, 262-691-7700.
