Rufus Goes Roaming

In January 2017 as I was scrolling through my Facebook feed I happened to come across the sweet, adorable face that was Rufus. I fell in love instantly.  I read his story and saw that he was losing use of his rear legs, that was ok. I already had a pug in wheels, I knew the routine.  Rufus was meant to be part    of our family and it didn’t take much talking, to convince my husband of the same ~ that precious face melted hearts.

We already had two pugs at home, Bob and Esther, rescues from our local animal shelter.  Also we were expecting a new baby pug in April, Carl.  It was a little intimidating knowing we were going from two pugs to four quite quickly.  Before our Bruno passed in 2015 we did have three pugs, so heck, what’s one more right?  Well, it was a perfect fit, Rufus loved baby Carl and they became best buds, and it was so precious watching them play.

I’m happy to say that a year later, although he needs wheels now, Rufus is a happy, healthy boy.  When we adopted Rufus, he had Mast Cell Tumor surgery for which they couldn’t get clear margins in his knee joint.  So we decided to do fractionated radiation to help give him the longest life possible.  Last week the pugs had their spring checkup and Rufus is doing great!

Rufus has been able to travel to #PugsTakeChicago, he’s been to the first annual Pug Camp in Pennsylvania. We traveled through Canada, so he’s an international pug!  Also last fall we attended #PugsTakeDC.  This past February he was all in favor of taking a break from winter and chill by the pool in Florida for awhile.  This summer looks to be as jam packed with pug activities as the previous year, his smiling face will be enjoying it all.

It was a pleasure adopting from MMPC.  Susan and Gwynne were so easy to work with, and it’s a blessing that there are people like them who help give pugs a second chance at life.   We’ve also met so many other pug loving people who we can’t wait to see again this summer at the annual picnic.

Pug hugs and kisses,

Rebeka and Tony, Rufus, Bob, Esther and Carl

President's Corner by Libby Jean

Have you ever noticed how people tell you all that’s wrong with pugs? They are quick to list all the health concerns that come with this breed: skin problems, breathing problems, eye problems, and tail problems. The list goes on and on.  They go out of their way to say, “They are so ugly, they are cute”!

Let’s face it.  There is no such thing as a perfect pet.  Like their owners, they get old.  Their joints get stiff making it harder to get around.  Their eye sight and hearing fails.  And, I say this with a bit of humbleness, they can’t quite make it to the bathroom like they used to.
Love goes deeper than these things.  True love is found in those who find the beauty behind the imperfections.  Love is the person who will build a cart for a dog that can’t walk on their own.  Love is the person who hand-feeds a tired old dog too weak to stand at a bowl. Love is the person who doesn’t give up on an old dog with a weak bladder. Love is the person who holds their dear friend when they have puppy breath and as they take their last few breaths. Love is…

Be brave in your love for this challenging breed.  They will return your love ten-fold.

Adoptable Rescue Bella

Bella is an absolutely adorable cuddle bug.  She had been socialized quite a bit while in Rescue. She has been meeting more people and finding out that treats come with strangers.  When given a chance to warm up, at her own speed,  she really comes out of her shell.  Bella still needs a fence, but she also walks very well on the leash.  She has been to the dog park and runs with great glee.  The absolute joy she shows just running is so much fun to see.  Rescue has been so good for Bella.  Exposure to many different people, places, and  things has had a positive impact on her.   Request an adoption application at adoptpugs@hotmail.com
Miss Hailey still has an eye out ~  looking for her new home
