A CONVERSATION WITH COUNCILWOMAN SUZIE PRICE

Dear Neighbors:

Don’t miss our Thursday, March 1 meeting.  For the first half of the meeting, Councilwoman Suzie Price will give her yearly update on what’s been going on and what is on the drawing board for Belmont Shore and Belmont Park.  The second half will be devoted to your questions for the councilwoman.  DON’T FORGET OUR MARCH MEETING WILL BEGIN AT 6:30 pm INSTEAD OF 6 pm.  Members asked that we try beginning a half hour later for a couple of months.

Our February 1 meeting was a great success.  Commander Erik Herzog took us through an hour of police calls on a Friday evening, explaining what each call was about, how quickly it was responded to and the final resolution.  It was an “eye opener” for all who attended and we had a packed house.

Following our March meeting with the Councilwoman we have three compelling programs planned:

April 5 – The Pros and Cons of Rent Control
May 3 – City Auditor Laura Doud
June 7 – City Prosecutor Doug Haubert on the new Belmont Shore Prosecutor

If you are not yet a member you can join by going to our website:  http://www.shorefriends.org and click on JOIN.  Dues are $15 per year per person.

We look forward to seeing you at
6:30 pm, Thursday, March 1, at St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, 510 East Broadway at Granada Avenue.  Bring a friend with you to the meeting.

Cordially,

SO MOVED: City Council February 13, 2018

By Harry Saltzgaver
Executive Editor

Bicycle thefts and chop shops long have been associated with the homeless population in Long Beach, and in particular with those selling the results to buy drugs.

So Third District City Councilwoman Suzie Price led a charge Tuesday to make it illegal to assemble or take bicycles apart in public. Price, Daryl Supernaw (Fourth), Dee Andrews (Sixth) and Al Austin (Eighth) joined Price in the request to have the city attorney draft an ordinance creating the new law.

Price said the Public Works Department should work with the Police Department to identify "chop shops" where bicycles are taken apart and parts sold. Then, with the new law in hand, police and city employees could remove both bicycles and bicycle parts.

An additional current article regarding Bike Chop Shops can be found in the Press-Telegram.

LEEWAY SAILING CENTER DOCK REBUILD

This month, we are taking you behind the construction fences at the Leeway Sailing Center to see the progress that has been made on the dock rebuild! The Leeway Sailing Center is another facility that is widely enjoyed by community members and it has been such a treat to see this project move forward. This project is on-track to be completed by May 2018, just in time for the summer season!

STILL IN PROGRESS...

We are putting the finishing touches on a few highly anticipated facilities! The Marine Stadium Judging Stand has been receiving a much-needed rehabilitation and crews are wrapping up with the final items. Just up the street at the Colorado Lagoon, we have completely renovated the restrooms, just another effort
taken to highlight and rehabilitate one of the treasures of our community. The Colorado Lagoon is used all week by people from near and far and we were excited to partner with the Public Works Department to ensure that visitors of the Lagoon have safe and clean facilities to use! And finally, Public Works is putting the finishing touches on the Marina Vista Park restrooms which feature individual restroom stalls for increased safety, baby changing stations, and a fresh new design! The existing restroom facility will soon be demolished and the new facility will be open to everyone who comes to enjoy the park!
