Creighton AD & MBB Selection Committee chair Rasmussen responds to questions about the selection process by trading emails, notes & perspective with the Omaha World-Herald's Chatelain. One example, "...while non-conference SOS is a number referred to by the committee and the public, it is not the non-conference SOS that the committee looks at but the non-conference games with specifics that the committee looks at. Did you challenge yourself in non-conference play (especially based upon what you anticipated the strength of your team to be-and based upon this small factor I would say that Nebraska's non-conference schedule was more challenging to Nebraska than Michigan State's was to Michigan State, even though Michigan State played Duke, North Carolina, UConn and Notre Dame a two-week period). Did you give the committee a picture of whether or not you should be in consideration for an at-large spot or a high seed in the tournament if you did not win your conference tournament? […] Because we don't have a great amount of time or opportunity to discuss each team's process with great specifics, the public often draws incorrect conclusions based upon their level of information. The conclusions they draw are understandable based upon the information they have, but incorrect overall because they have not seen nor heard the entire process concerning a specific team." Another, "Many think that the first and second quadrants are silos and that every win in the first quadrant or every win in the second quadrant is treated equally. I think it is important that while we refer to first and second quadrant wins, we also better communicate that this is only a sorting mechanism and each game in these quadrants is looked at differently. They don't have the same value." Lots. lots more. (link)
Michigan State Interim AD Beekman gets a salary of $400K to lead the Spartans in a temporary fashion. MSU FB HC Dantonio's contract was extended by a year, a process that occurs on a rolling basis & currently gives him six more years in East Lansing. Interim Prez Engler on Dantonio, "He's one of the most honorable coaches, I think, in the country." (link, link)
The Chronicle of Higher Education's Stripling dives back into academic majors at Auburn that were heavily populated by student-athletes & previous communications that show leadership on The Plains debated the addition of more such options for the Tigers. As you'll recall, part of the story stems from an overabundance of student-athletes who were Public Administration majors & a push by influential voices on the academic side of the institution to discontinue the major, only to see athletics offer to assist with its funding. Stripling: "The prevailing view of the college sports establishment is that the crowding of athletes in a particular major, in and of itself, is not inherently bad or suggestive of academic fraud. Patterns of the sort on display at Auburn, however, invite thorny questions about whether the academic careers of athletes are artificially constrained — particularly among underrepresented minorities. [...] Longtime observers of the university see this latest conflict as part of a cycle at Auburn, where critics inspire fleeting consternation and public outrage, only to see the university shrug and move on until athletics overreaches again. It is a pattern that Mark Burns, a retired associate professor of political science who taught occasional courses in public administration, describes as deeply embedded in the university’s history and culture." Long read, lots of data & comments from leadership at AU. (link)
Oregon State enacts a new rule that will require all student-athletes to disclose any past felony convictions & if they are sex offenders. The policy applies to all continuing & new student-athletes prior to the fall semester of this year. Prez Ray: "The purpose of this self-disclosure policy is not to prevent students with these histories from enrolling, but rather to support the safety of the OSU community, and to support these students' success as they progress through their education onto graduation." (link); The timing of the announcement comes as OSU is in the spotlight for allowing Baseball student-athlete Heimlich to remain with the squad after a previous count of felony child molestation. Heimlich threw six innings of two-run ball as the Beavs opening day starter yesterday in a win over New Mexico. CBSSports.com's Dodd & others note there little comments coming from Oregon State on the situation. Dodd sources the opinions of other ADs & here's one of note, "Everybody, most of the time, deserves a second chance. I get that. [Heimlich] went through his counseling, but it was a 6-year-old child … You've got little girls coming to your games. You can't have that as an image with your program with Larry Nassar and all those things going on. Really? You just have to say, 'I'm sorry, young man, you can't play for us.'" (link)
Arkansas State has indeed filed a lawsuit against Miami (FL) claiming breach of contract for the cancelled FB match-up between the pair last season. The filing states the Canes have made no good faith attempt to reschedule to contest, even though a popular scheduling service indicates opportunities in 2020 or 2021, yet UM says they have no openings until 2024 or later. ASU General Counsel Phelps: "It is unfortunate that we have reached this point, but Miami's actions left us with no choice. We look forward to proceeding to trial." In the balance: $650K, plus pre- and post-trial interests. (link)
Cash: USF has generated nearly $7M for its new indoor FB digs, around half of what Bulls AD Harlan believes the facility could end up running. Harlan also hints that a naming rights deal could be close for the Sun Dome, points to the challenge of getting "brand name" opponents for non-conference FB match-ups, tips his hat to UCF for the outstanding FB campaign by the Knights, takes a pass on talking about any developments around his own contract extension & more. (link); Drexel gets a $1M commitment toward its $3.5M renovation of the Vidas Athletic Complex. (link); Denver's Men's Hockey HC spot got endowed thanks to a seven-figure commitment by DU alum Goodman. (link)
Speaking of indoor FB facilities, Middle Tennessee State looks to be making its own push for expanded space that could also include separate indoor digs for multi-sport use. Blue Raiders AD Massaro says the plans still need full review by the university's Board, but additions could create an impressive athletics district in Murfreesboro. There's also plans to upgrade the Murphy Center as part of the work with specific focus on new suites & loges. (link)
Arkansas sports management professor Dittmore, who has worked his fair share of Olympic Games, looks at potential ways communications personnel in college athletics could improve their craft by mirroring some media policies at Winter & Summer Games. Specifically, "It is highly unlikely that college sports would consider reversing its current financial model to eliminate corporate logos and commercial crossover. But, it could move toward focusing game presentation and operations more on the athletes than commercial interests. A first step would be to tighten access for individuals around the field of play. Do boosters really have a function on the sideline? Do photographers need to sprint on to the field at the end of the game like a horse released from the starting gate at the Kentucky Derby? […] When all members of the media hear the same post-game quotes from the same sources, stories become homogeneous. SIDs should encourage greater diversity of voices. Make more, if not all, student-athletes available." More. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Another notable college athletics leader who's experienced a number of Olympic Games is College Football Playoff Executive Director Hancock & the current Winter version in PyeongChang is no exception. Hancock & his wife, Nicki, are currently aiding media functions for the event & Hancock has kept a running diary detailing interesting interactions, his daily food encounters, running into notable athletes, some outdoor adventures & of course, taking in some of the action. (link)

Wisconsin's Athletic Board voted to increase FB student ticket prices from $24 to $27 per game and also discussed ways to get the students into their seats before kickoff. New board member and FB student-athlete Farrar suggested a first-come, first-serve policy. Badgers AD Alvarez on the empty seats early in the game: "(It's a concern) when a player speaks up, you guys (in the media) have written about it. I appreciate that (students) come. I appreciate that they buy the tickets. The players talk about the fact that they take the field and they look into their students and maybe it's half full. It concerns them. ... I just want to throw some ideas around and see how we can rectify that." Alvarez does not believe in free give-aways as incentives, but wants his senior staff to come up with some ways to rectify the situation. (link)
In his latest 'Ask the AD' segment, Kansas State boss Taylor covers some good ground, including an update on a new strategic plan for the Wildcats, "We're going to look at our mission and vision and we're going to bring somebody in to help us go through that - they're planning to come in and talk to all of our department heads, all of our coaches, senior staff and say okay where does K-State Athletics want to be three to five years from now but not only from a financial perspective student-athlete success, etc., and we'll get a plan and we'll unveil that sometime later this summer to say okay here's what our future looks like at least from what our employees want, our staff wants, what our coaches want and our goals for the next three to five years." Taylor also touched upon hosting NBA Hall of Famer Abdul-Jabbar as part of diversity initiatives & the possibility of a craft beer event during FB season. (link)
New Mexico State Board of Regents Chair Hicks is well aware of the statements made by her University of New Mexico counterpart, Doughty, who suggested last week that UNM should forgive the athletic department's outstanding $4.7M debt. Hicks: "If they were to (forgive the debt), we have essentially a case study to do it ourselves." NMSU owes $4.1M to the main campus, but has a much smaller overall budget ($18M) than UNM ($33M). Hicks indicates that the school is considering extending the debt payment services: "We have had conversations with (New Mexico Higher Education Secretary Barbara Damron) and it's an internal loan and how we handle that is up to us. To be very clear, it's a regent's decision, not a university decision. I guarantee you (Damron) is not looking for a forgiveness of a loan, but a deferment is not out of the question at all." The current repayment schedule: $823,036 this year, $903,246 next year, $1.8 million in FY20 and the remaining $564,654 in FY21. (link)
Yesterday's D1.ticker included a clip on a long interview with Nebraska AD Moos, but here's a bit more as the Huskers' boss says beer in public areas of Memorial Stadium is a non-starter. Moos also indicates FB season ticket prices & donation level will no go up in the face of "Frost mania," nor are there plans in Lincoln to add Ice Hockey programs or play more than one FB spring game. (link)
Oregon MBB HC Altman on the potential change to a 20-game conference schedule in the Pac-12: "I imagine we’ll see how it goes for them and maybe be a year or two behind them [Big Ten and ACC]. I am not sure why we wouldn’t look at the results before making a change. .. Whatever they decide is fine with me. I don't care one way or the other." Utah HC Krystkowiak is in favor of the switch. (link)
Quotable/Personnel Notes: North Carolina MBB HC Williams on the hubbub around MBB-FBI developments, "I feel very comfortable. If the phone rings at night, I’m not worried about that. I may worry about a lot of other things but it ain’t about that." (link); New Mexico AD Nunez on the 30-day suspension for FB HC Davie: "He’s still a Lobo, he’s our coach. He’s on a 30-day suspension so he’ll be our coach once his 30 days are complete." (link); Siena AD D'Argenio says he's committed to MBB HC Patsos. (link); Here's your annual "will Gregg Marshall stay at Wichita State" piece. This one from ESPN's Medcalf. (link); LaSalle AD Bradshaw will hire a new Field Hockey HC. Key College Football Playoff TV ratings news from AdAge's Crupi: "Out-of-home deliveries lift ESPN's telecast of the Jan. 8 Bama-Georgia College Football Championship game to 29.9M viewers, up 5% vs. 28.4M for all in-home viewing. Rose Bowl also gets a 5% OOH boost, from 26.9M to 28.3M." (link); One TV property not suffering from a downturn in overall consumption is the NBA as TV ratings this year are up an astounding 15% through the first half of the season. (link)

Iowa State AD Pollard opens up about his life after suffering a heart attack during an event at Northern Iowa back in 2015. Pollard: "So my outlook on the whole point of activity being active has completely changed, from something that I did because maybe I was good at it and I want to be competitive at it, but never once thought about the value of it. And I always thought I was invincible, so I never really thought about the damage I was doing to myself by making unhealthy choices. [...] I would argue that stress, or how you react to stress, may be one of the biggest causes of what really happens with heart attacks." (link)
Long read on how Bryant AD Smith ended up in the AD chair, a career highlighted by never thinking he'd leave the FB field, learning the business under Wagner AD Hameline, a leadership stint at Iowa State that actually included serving as MBB HC for two weeks, then finally on to helping the Bulldogs transition from the DII ranks. Smith touches on a number of items currently on his radar, but a new conference alignment is not one of them, "The Northeast Conference has been so good to us and they welcomed us with open arms and I think that we’re such a good fit for the Northeast Conference right now that we’re not doing anything to actively pursue or go after another conference." The marketing challenge Smithfield includes 20 other DI foes within a two-hour drive of campus as Smith says he has the best job in world, "I take this job very seriously to make sure everyone here can be successful." Lots more. (link)
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports former UNLV Executive Assoc. AD for Compliance Tolliver was under investigation for sexual harassment before resigning last Friday. Jackson Lewis conducted a probe for the Rebels, though the outcome of that process is not known yet. No word from Prez Jessup, AD Reed-Francois or Toliver himself. Two women provide background to the newspaper detailing relationships they had with Toliver while student advisors a number of years ago. (link)
As the average number of fans through turnstiles around the FBS last season decreased, the fervor at Purdue generated $2.563M more in 2017 than 2016 as the Boilermakers packed in an average of 13,433 more supporters per game. The AP's Russo: "Purdue made $348,634 in merchandise sales this season, $1,871,552 on concessions and $727,545 on parking." Penn State was another outlier as the Nittany Lions averaged more than 6K more in '17, resulting in a boost of $5M+ to the top line. (link)
How have Florida Gulf Coast's MBB & WBB programs been so successful so early in their DI tenures? Eagles AD Kavanagh points to consistent high-level HCs, like WBB's Smesko, who has led his squad since 2002, spurning a number of high-level suitors over the years. Kavanagh also notes the conference-leading salaries both Smesko ($300K) & MBB boss Dooley ($350K) enjoy, "They're substantially the highest and rightfully so. We market ourselves not within the ASUN. Our benchmarks are other quality mid-major programs who are generating resources like we are." Dooley mentions continual enhancements to the student-athlete experience, a solid budget to work with & more as Atlantic Sun competitive dynamics are also explored in the piece. (link)
Also Noticed: North Texas students finally voted on a potential increase to the athletic fee, but the outcome won't be known for a bit longer as a complaint was submitted on the process. (link); Here's the commercial Kentucky is running along side the NBA All-Star festivities this weekend. (link); Sounds like beer gardens are coming to Texas A&M's Baseball offering. (link); The Aggies & Appalachian State will meet on the gridiron in 2022. (link); College Baseball's opening day brought a record crowd to LSU's Alex Box Stadium. 12,844.
