Iowa State AD Pollard opens up about his life after suffering a heart attack during an event at Northern Iowa back in 2015. Pollard: "So my outlook on the whole point of activity being active has completely changed, from something that I did because maybe I was good at it and I want to be competitive at it, but never once thought about the value of it. And I always thought I was invincible, so I never really thought about the damage I was doing to myself by making unhealthy choices. [...] I would argue that stress, or how you react to stress, may be one of the biggest causes of what really happens with heart attacks." (link)

Long read on how Bryant AD Smith ended up in the AD chair, a career highlighted by never thinking he'd leave the FB field, learning the business under Wagner AD Hameline, a leadership stint at Iowa State that actually included serving as MBB HC for two weeks, then finally on to helping the Bulldogs transition from the DII ranks. Smith touches on a number of items currently on his radar, but a new conference alignment is not one of them, "The Northeast Conference has been so good to us and they welcomed us with open arms and I think that we’re such a good fit for the Northeast Conference right now that we’re not doing anything to actively pursue or go after another conference." The marketing challenge Smithfield includes 20 other DI foes within a two-hour drive of campus as Smith says he has the best job in world, "I take this job very seriously to make sure everyone here can be successful." Lots more. (link)

How have Florida Gulf Coast's MBB & WBB programs been so successful so early in their DI tenures? Eagles AD Kavanagh points to consistent high-level HCs, like WBB's Smesko, who has led his squad since 2002, spurning a number of high-level suitors over the years. Kavanagh also notes the conference-leading salaries both Smesko ($300K) & MBB boss Dooley ($350K) enjoy, "They're substantially the highest and rightfully so. We market ourselves not within the ASUN. Our benchmarks are other quality mid-major programs who are generating resources like we are." Dooley mentions continual enhancements to the student-athlete experience, a solid budget to work with & more as Atlantic Sun competitive dynamics are also explored in the piece. (link)
