Welcome back!

We hope you're having a fantastic raumati (summer) and you're looking forward to a great year of sustainability action in your schools and centres.

Our first regional Exploring Enviroschools workshop for the year is coming up on 9 March. We also have many other exciting teacher and student events for you to look forward to. Don't forget too, the fabulous opportunity to attend the New Zealand Association of Environmental Education Conference in Wellington from 18 to 20 April.

We're excited to add a new section to our newsletter - introducing Kids Kōrero. This is a space for tamariki to share their sustainability stories. If students from your school or centre have a video or blog or story to share, please contact either your facilitator or Claire enviroschools@gw.govt.nz

This workshop is an opportunity for Enviroschools wanting to reflect on their Enviroschools journey to learn more about the Enviroschools Holistic Reflection Process.

Kids Kōrero

Boulcott School's Greenie Group love pad thai, but did not love the polystyrene containers it was being delivered to their school in. They wrote this email which convinced their suppliedr to change to a compostable container! Watch their Pad Thai News video.

Upcoming Events and Important dates

Movin'March
Movin'March is the Wellington region's annual celebration of safe and active travel to school. It's a great opportunity for children to learn, grow and have fun! Movin'March 2018 runs from March 5th - 29th. You may choose to run your activities through a particular week, or distribute them throughout the month. It's completely up to you.

National Commission for UNESCO Award in Global Citizenship Education

Are you encouraging New Zealanders from all walks of life and of all ages to become responsible and active global citizens? Tell NZ National Commission for UNESCO about your global citizenship education project or develop a new one between now and March 2018 and be in to win up to $3,000 in cash prizes.

Open for submissions until Monday 19 March 2018.

Win Native Trees

Trees That Count, Forest & Bird and the Kiwi Conservation Club (KCC) have been working together this summer, to help raise awareness of the important role of native trees in climate change. Your group could win up to 500 native trees to plant in your community or at your school next winter.

Predator Free Schools Wellington
Schools in and around the Miramar Peninsula have an exciting opportunity to partake in the Predator Free Schools Programme. Students have the opportunity to become conservation leaders in their school and community. The year will kick off with two trapping and tracking days hosted on the 28th at Worser Bay School and the 1st of March at EBIS.

Predator Free Primary
Primary schools will receive ongoing support for their trapping, monitoring, recording results and restoration through the year. To enquire about Predator Free in primary schools contact Darren at Darren.VanHoof@visitzealandia.com

Papa Taiao Predator Free Secondary Schools Programme
Papa Taiao will be delivering Predator Free to secondary schools. Students can integrate NCEA standards with their predator control work. For more information visit the Papa Taiao website or email Miriam at miriam@papataiaoearthcare.nz

What do you enjoy the most about being part of Enviroschools?
Everytime I meet with schools, it always amazes me the wonderful projects schools are involved with during the year and the progress they make in their sustainability journey, even though the lead teachers tell me they have done nothing ...

Name one important quality for a successful Enviroschool?
Where I see Enviroschools humming is when the lead teacher is supported by a team of motivated colleagues

What sustainability issues / aspects are you personally passionate about?
For some time this has been water in all its facets.

How do you recharge?
With a book or sailing

What super power would you like to have?
Teleporting - so I don’t need to travel 35 hours to see family on the other side of the world
