NATIONAL NEWS

ARE YOU CO-OP CURIOUS?
Want to know what’s what about a co-op? You can now take a Farming Together online course - an Australian-first that will help your group understand collaborative business structures. It includes information on governance, financing and member engagement. The course comprises six, 10-minute video lessons with quizzes. While it is designed for agricultural groups, it is relevant for other potential co-ops - such as housing or energy co-ops - anywhere in Australia. Complete the entire course and pass the tests and you receive certification from Farming Together.
At www.farmingtogether.com.au>Learn>Online, you'll find two versions: a simpler ‘how-to’ course preview and the full certification course. Both are currently at no cost. The video lessons are self-paced, you can begin and stop them at any time and each lesson provides access to support resources.

FARMING TOGETHER GOES GARLICIOUS

A garlic-growers co-op, formed through Farming Together, has just dispatched its largest-ever bulk order, at prices more than double the prevailing wholesale price. There are also orders for a 50kg consignment and another for 20kg, meaning that the group has sold out its first season’s production. The 12 non-growing members of the 26-member co-op will now come into full production for next season’s harvest as a result of the demand and the group’s capacity to sell.Helen Lynch, of the group's working group said: “The co-op structure meant we could apply new criteria to our produce – the size, the trim – and that lifted our overall quality. We could never have achieved all this before,” Helen said. “The co-op structure has lifted our game.”

ABOUT US
The $14.9m Farming Together program is a nation-wide campaign for primary producers and processors to collaborate and claim marketplace power. Australian Government funding is helping agricultural groups value-add, secure premium pricing, scale-up production, attract capital investment, earn new markets or secure lower input costs. All farmers who register receive one-on-one expert advice to discuss their opportunities and appetite to create a successful collaborative group. This could be either as a structured co-operative, as a collective bargaining entity or as a less-formal collaborative group.
Farming Together is delivered by Southern Cross University on behalf of the Australian Government. It comprises a highly experienced senior team drawn from a wide range of commodity groups from across Australia and is backed by an industry advisory group representing experts from WA, NT, Queensland, Victoria, SA and NSW.
