February News from JOF

Hi Friends While February might be a hard month to pronounce, it is an opportune time to celebrate successes and make plans. This year, we are toasting our 20th anniversary as an organization and our work to improve the lives of people with musculoskeletal conditions through education, research and service.

At our February Board meeting, we welcomed two new directors, Julie Cragholm and Justin Clark, whom you’ll read about in this issue.

Earlier in February, a cohort of nine professionals completed JOF’s six-month Orthopedic Primary Care (OPC) education program, learning to diagnose and manage common orthopedic conditions in primary care settings. These primary care providers worked hard and deserve our congratulations.

Our goal this year is to take our successful OPC course to the next level, creating an online, multimedia program that would carry American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification. We are seeking donations to accomplish these tasks.

March 1 marks the opening of applications for the 2018 Summer Intern Program, designed to provide college students with an immersion experience in health care.

Also in March, JOF principals Kathleen Geier, NP, and AJ Benham, NP, will present talks and workshops at the California Association for Nurse Practitioners Annual Educational Conference in San Diego (March 22-25). JOF is an event sponsor. If you are attending the conference this year, please sign up for our classes, and seek us out to say “hello!”

Lastly, JOF will offer two Injection Workshops this year—Saturday, June 23, and Saturday, October 27, in the Nursing Simulation Lab at Holy Names University in Oakland. Stay tuned for details!

We hope you find our newsletter useful, and we invite you to follow and engage with us on social media.

Yours in good health,
Kathleen Geier, DNP and AJ Benham, DNP

Applications Open for the JOF Summer Intern Program

Applications are now open for JOF’s Summer Intern Program, which runs July 10 to August 18, 2018. All applications must be received by June 1.

The Summer Intern Program is designed to provide college students with an immersion experience in health care. The program gives students the opportunity to explore various health fields while shadowing experienced providers as they treat patients.

Whether a student is interested in becoming a nurse, a physician, a physician assistant, or a physical or occupational therapist, this internship allows each student the chance to witness the unique aspects of each professional role.

Apply Today

Students can apply online or download the application in printable PDF format at www.jacksonortho.org. The cost of the program in 2018 is $500 per student. Scholarships may be made available, based on student need. For details, write info@jacksonortho.org.
Julie Cragholm and Justin Clark Join Board of Directors
At the February 15 Board of Directors meeting, JOF welcomed new Directors Julie Cragholm and Justin Clark.

Julie Cragholm’s first exposure to medicine was as an intern with the JOF Summer Intern Program, which she calls “one of the best experiences of my life.” Now a Senior Physician Assistant in the Arthroplasty Department at the UCSF Orthopaedic Institute in San Francisco, Julie has worked as a Physician Assistant for the past nine years. She has also taught at Stanford, volunteered at free primary-care clinics, and learned to assist and teach in the operating theatre. She is excited to share her knowledge and work together with JOF “to continue to explore this fantastic world of orthopedics, medicine and life.”

Justin Clark is Principal and Co-founder of Social Change Consulting in Oakland. He has over fifteen years of nonprofit experience, with expertise in online fundraising, email communication strategy, relationship management, and data management. Justin concentrates on using technology and data to help nonprofits reach more people with their mission and story. He began working with JOF as a consultant and is excited to now support the organization as a Board member. Justin is no stranger to orthopedic health issues due to his personal experience with Marfan syndrome.
