Tuesday of the Sixth Week in Ordinary Time

Ash Wednesday
Lent begins tomorrow, Wednesday, February 14. Ashes will be distributed during the 6:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 12:00 Noon (Traditional Latin), 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Masses. Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation but as always you are encouraged to attend Mass. It is a Day of Mandatory Abstinence & Fast.

Abstinence
Is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age or older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.

Fasting
In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed by all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 years, inclusive. On days of fasting, such as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. You may not eat between meals, but liquids are permitted.

Note: If a person is unable to observe the above expectations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are encouraged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

About St. John the Beloved

Founded in 1913 as a Mission of St. James Catholic Church, St. John became a parish in 1951. Mr. John Carlin dreamed of a church on the western boundary of his own property in rural El Nido, Virginia. In 1912, his son, William M. Carlin, gave a half-acre of land for the chapel that would serve less than a dozen families. The Most Reverend Denis J. O'Connell, Bishop of Richmond, laid its corner stone on the afternoon of September 21, 1913. Now over 5,000 parishioners call St. John their spiritual home. More than a century later, we are still on a mission. Join us!
