NYMCRA Paddler Profile:
Kim Greiner
Hometown: Esperance, NY
Number of years racing: about 22
Paddling accomplishments: won the mixed C-2 stock class in the General Clinton in 2006; won the C-2 stock women’s Adirondack Canoe Classic in 2005 & women’s C-2 amateur in 2011; beat Blanche Town in the Saranac Challenge once; took 2nd place C-4 mixed pro in Indian Lake; had a respectable finish in 2016 Nationals in C-1 amateur women; have been women’s points champion three times (I have the fleeces to prove it); won C-2 mixed amateur in the BluMouLA-BuFuRa in 2017; I have fun paddling with any partner in any race
How did you get into racing: was pit crew for years for Ed and his partners in the Adirondack Canoe Classic; Ed and I did our first race together in the early 1990’s (Towpath Regatta – little 4.5 mi downstream on the Mohawk River) and I was hooked
Paddling goals: get closer to and finally beat “The Dang Cooleys” (inside joke – if you print this, they’ll get it); improve my C-1 paddling; do the Clinton and 90 miler again with Ed and maybe also with Sue Knapik
Bow or stern: I prefer the stern, but can also paddle bow when a partner prefers stern
Favorite partner ever: love of my life, Ed Greiner (although, Sue Knapik runs a close second)
Preferred boat model: we currently run a Crozier V-1, but may be looking for something else soon
Favorite canoeing related memory: coming into Bainbridge during the Clinton with what sounded like thousands of people screaming for us then having to get our boat jigged because we finished first
Favorite place to paddle: Raquette River (for fun not in a race because it never ends!)
Any other relevant information: Paddling is my favorite activity in the whole world. My job is stressful and my life is full. Just sitting in the boat makes that all go away. I am very blessed to enjoy the sport, the camaraderie, and going home with my favorite partner. I’ll be retiring at the end of July 2018. I plan to have more time to train and hope to make more paddlers keep looking over their shoulders, or better yet, watch MY back for a change!
