TCHC moves toward a more tenant-centric focus in 2018

TCHC will continue to improve service delivery for tenants in 2018. This year, TCHC will invest a record $300 million in capital repair renewal, implement an enhanced fire life safety program and introduce a new tenant framework. These initiatives will help TCHC improve living conditions, safety and service delivery for tenants.

Following the 2017 tenant survey, TCHC will conduct regular tenant surveys to get real-time insights into the organization’s service delivery for tenants and identify priorities for service enhancements.

“Our goal is to make TCHC a more tenant-centric, responsive and accountable social housing provider, and an organization the entire city can be proud of,” President and CEO Kathy Milsom said. “We are committed to building a positive work environment and a culture dedicated to delivering responsive service, greater accountability for results, and continued improvement of our service delivery and financial performance.”

Donate to support postsecondary education for our city’s young leaders

Now in its 16th year, the Investing in Our Diversity Scholarship Program has awarded over $973,000 in scholarships to 362 youth from across Toronto.

The program is a joint partnership between Toronto Community Housing and Scadding Court Community Centre. With the support of corporations, community partners and individuals, the program annually awards scholarships for postsecondary education or vocational training to high school students or recent graduates involved in anti-racism, diversity or community-building activities in their communities. Last year, more than $137,500 in scholarships were awarded to 45 youth from across the city. The deadline to apply is February 23, 2018.

Each scholarship recipient receives up to $4,000 towards postsecondary education or vocational training costs. Toronto Community Housing always welcomes new donors to help even more students achieve their dreams and continue on the path of success.

If you’d like more information about the program or about how to make a donation, please contact Debra Shaw at debra.shaw@torontohousing.ca. Supporting our young people is an investment towards building a strong future for Toronto and Canada.

Transforming TCHC’s priority transfer process

The Toronto Ombudsman has issued a report recommending changes to TCHC’s priority transfer process for tenants. TCHC supports all the recommendations and will implement them all. Work is already underway to establish a new Crisis priority category, as recommended by the Ombudsman.

The new process would maintain Special Priority transfers, which are mandated under the Housing Services Act for tenants at risk due to domestic abuse in their home, as the top priority. But a new Crisis priority would become the second priority category, ahead of the current second priority, Overhoused.

The Crisis priority will help Toronto Community Housing to respond quickly and effectively in processing priority transfer requests. TCHC will consult with tenants, staff and community stakeholders as it works to put the new Crisis priority process in place by July 1, 2018.
