What's Going On at NCTR?
Last week NCTR visited the Nashville Teacher Residency (NTR) to observe residents as they engaged in the most demanding lead teaching load of their preparation cycle. NCTR’s New Site Development team had the opportunity to observe high quality content-centered coaching. During the session, the NTR mentor provided feedback to the resident on her performance, made adjustments to her teaching practice, and encouraged and released her to reframe the lesson so students could better understand why the content was important.
As we mentioned last week, NCTR is in Seattle this week facilitating a site visit for our Network Partners to the Seattle Teacher Residency (STR). During the visit, partners will hear about STR’s methods for designing curriculum to achieve program goals, and their approach to teaching literacy and classroom management. They will also discuss the role of mentorship in the residency year curriculum with a panel of STR mentors, learn how to focus on equity in practice-based teacher preparation, and build skills around observing and providing feedback to residents through sessions guided by STR staff.

Partner Updates
Our New Site Development partner, Canisius College, officially launched its Western New York Teacher Residency earlier this month. In the college’s press release, Jeffrey R. Lindauer, dean of the School of Education and Human Services said, “Urban teachers need extended experiences in the field to meet the needs of school-dependent students." The Western New York Teacher Residency will provide participants with a scholarship covering 30 percent of graduate tuition, a stipend of about $20,000 during the second year, and discounted on-campus housing.

NTC's Teacher Induction Program Standards
The New Teacher Center (NTC) published and released its Teacher Induction Program Standards (TIPS) this week. The standards, once only available to the agency’s paying clients, provides “program leaders, policymakers and researchers with an aspirational framework for program design, implementation and evaluation” for novice teacher induction.
NTC’s TIPS were built on three programmatic elements that identify areas for consideration by organizations that are building and growing induction programs. Those include:
- Foundational aspects: The ground floor of a good induction program. Areas for consideration include designing clear program vision and goals, developing strong program leadership and communication, and creating opportunities for school leader engagement;
- Structural aspects: The induction program components, practices and activities that define mentor roles and responsibilities, professional learning, and assessments, and;
- Instructional aspects: Ensuring that classroom practices encourage student learning through strategies that focus on the “knowledge, capabilities and dispositions that are critical for new teachers to develop in their first two to three years of practice.”
Each of the TIPS aspects includes questions and indicators that are designed to guide users toward continuous improvement.
NTC’s approach has been backed by research, according to Education Week. “A recent independent study found that if new teachers are paired with high-quality, trained mentors and receive frequent feedback for two years, their students outperform their peers in both English/language arts and mathematics.”
