Coming help with our:

TRY CURLING EVENTS
We have a full roster of people - at lest 50 enthusiastic, new curlers - signed up for Thursday, Feb  15, Try Curling, and your help would be greatly appreciated.  The event starts at 6:00pm and runs until 9:00pm.  It’s organized by stations, and it takes about 30 minutes for the first two groups to move through the stations in order to form teams for a 2-end game. Please consider helping as these events represent our best source for new curlers and new members.

SPRING TRAINING BONSPIEL
Sign up today for our Spring Training Bonspiel and enjoy a fun competition, a Spring Training Game and great weather.  Average early March temperature in Phoenix is between 74 and 82 degrees (we're already there)!  For more information on Spring Training, click HERE.  To register, click HERE.  The baseball game this year is the SF Giants at LA Angels at Tempe Diablo Stadium on Saturday, March 10th at 1pm.  Tickets are available to anyone that wants to attend (need not be playing in the spiel) for $35.  There are only a few spots left so register your team now!

LEAGUE players - please accommodate our Try Curling events
Thursday night league participants - PLEASE NOTE as we are just entering the Olympic push, we appreciate everyone's participation in launching the new Mentor Leagues that you have undoubtedly been hearing about. You may have also seen that there are several Thursday night games scheduled later (8:00pm) to accommodate those leagues. While we are hoping for a great turnout, we are going to push the start to February 22nd. For that reason we are going to set the league starting time back to 6:30 on the schedule and on the calendar. On February 22nd-March 22 the normal league will start at 8:00pm. With the ultimate goal to increase membership, we are hoping you will still arrive early for the 6:30 Mentor League and share your curling knowledge and love of the game with our newest curlers! We know you are as excited as we are to grow our club and welcome the new curlers! Thanks again to every member and league player for your help and participation!  ... Beki Horsman, Thursday Competitive League Manager

OTHER IMPORTANT STUFF:

A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Greetings from the Membership Committee!!

The new year is well underway and the Olympics have begun! It’s a fun time to be a curler. As a follow-up to my previous letter and an adjunct to Jeff’s excellent President’s Letter, I’d like to outline a plan for sustaining growth in the club while avoiding burnout among any of the volunteers/members. Kim Gaddie and Mike Siggins have submitted our membership roster and dues to the USCA. We are around 177 strong…and growing. In an effort to expand our core group of volunteers who are teaching the sport to new curlers and mentoring those who have joined our ranks, I have taken the entire membership list and divided everyone into the following 3 categories:

1. Corporate LTC’s - staffed by retirees and those with flexible work schedules since these predominantly take place mid week. We have 3 to 6 of these each month.

2. Public LTC’s/Try Curling Events - mostly weekend events. We have lots of these now, but it will settle into a manageable schedule after the Olympics. These volunteers will come from our members who work during the week.

3. Sunday evening Beginner’s League (this will be ongoing, and may expand to additional time slots when it becomes necessary.) My hope is that these Sundays can be staffed by our curling couples…there are at least 25 of you, and I figure we won’t take one of you from the other on the weekend. If 2 or 3 couples agree to help each Sunday, you won’t have to do it more than a few times a year…I promise! :)

As you can tell…it’s just too much for a few people to staff all of these events! In the next few days or weeks you can expect to be contacted to help with one of these events by Wes Seeger, who is coordinating the Public events and Beginner’s League, or by Darryl Horsman or me, as we coordinate the Corporate Events.

A couple of things to note:  With a few exceptions, your name will only be placed on one list. You’ll know, for example, that if you are a reliable volunteer for Corporate events, you won’t be asked to come out and help on the weekends.

Darryl Horsman will be offering another Level 1 Instructor Course sometime this spring. If you haven’t taken the course, please do so. It’s an excellent way to get confident in the technique you’re teaching. BUT…even if you don’t have this certification, you still know more than a new curler, and you absolutely have something valuable to offer. We need your help.

Going forward, each week’s volunteers will be listed in the newsletter as a way of recognizing and showing our appreciation for your time. Our plan is to have a prize(s) for our most valuable volunteer(s) that will be awarded in June at the Annual Meeting.

The push now is for the Olympics, but the mission is to build a sustainable club that’s enjoyable for everyone. Thank you so much in advance for your willingness to say, “YES!”

Good curling,
Tracy Heuermann
