Spotlight on Thriving in Place

One of the niches I serve is the population over 55 years of age, and I hold the designation of Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES). Not only do I help people downsizing, or selling the family home, but I have resources to help you - or someone you know - stay at home, to help you thrive right where you are.  Here are some of the ways to help seniors stay home, or put off selling their home for a little longer:

Tackling the Steps:
Many of the Southern California homes were built on raised foundations and have at least a few steps up to the front door. These can be removed and replaced with a sloping approach.  Not a ramp, but a built up slope done with soil and pavers, that can actually enhance the curb appeal of a home, versus a ramp. For inside stairs, if you're in a 2 story home, there are the chair glides that go up the stairs.  (For those old enough to remember, I think of the old TV show "The Farmer's Daughter" and Mrs. Morley on her chair lift.)You can also add lights along the staircase that light up as you go by.

Ageless Kitchen Design:
On a recent webinar about aging in place, a kitchen without upper cabinets was introduced.  I was amazed at how practical it was, and how great it looked.  I have some examples on my Pinterest board, "Thriving in Place". Without upper cabinets, the lower ones have wide, organized drawers, with no reaching up. Also, touchless water faucets for both dirty and arthritic hands are helpful. Consider multi-height counters, especially on a kitchen island, to accommodate all ages.

Safety in the Bath
Tub cuts outs have become much more attractive, and can be done with an existing tub.  No more stepping over a high tub rim. Also, showers with no lip or edge, in order to walk in easily or roll in a wheelchair. A product called "Toilevator" raises the height of a toilet from the bottom, instead of using an unattractive seat topper. Even replacing smaller, shorter toilets with chair height toilets is helpful. Grab bars now come in all different finishes to match the decor, and can be integrated into the design of the bathroom

A Safe Home
With 1 in 3 Americans 50 years of age or older, the market for products to serve them is booming. Most want to stay in areas they know, versus moving away from friends and family. Non-slip tiles, pull down closet rods, offset hinges to widen doorways, furniture risers... The list goes on as the market embraces agelessness and thriving in place.
