R.W.Mangan, Principal

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

Today we recognised boys who gained Scholarship in 2017 at our annual Scholars Assembly. We welcomed back those who gained scholarships and have now left the college and the boys who are currently in Year 13, along with their parents and some grandparents.

We also welcomed back Old Boy, Blair Shepherd, as guest speaker.  Blair was Deputy Head Boy in 2011, Top Art Scholar, recipient of the Frank Lawson Memorial Cup awarded to the Top 13 student who contributes most to the College in academic, sport and the arts, and achieved a Scholarship in Geography and History.  Blair is now a litigation lawyer with local firm, Holland Beckett Law.

We are very pleased with the results from the examinations held in November and December last year with our boys gaining twenty-six scholarships including two at outstanding level.  Seventeen scholarships were achieved by boys in Year 13, and nine by Year 12 boys  in 2017.

Scholarship is the pinnacle of academic achievement at secondary school level.  It is the culmination of many years of academic study, academic ability and hard work by the student, combined with the support and guidance from subject teachers.  This support not only occurs in the year the examination is sat, but in the years prior, enabling the student to show their knowledge in the examination.

In total boys achieved scholarships spread across eleven different subject areas.

This shows the college has strength across a wide range of curricular subjects with very capable teachers to guide boys to success in scholarship.

A full list of boys who achieved Scholarship in 2017 is on page 2.

Subject Results:

English 1: History 1: Statistics 1: Geography 1 (Outstanding): Accounting 2: Physics 2: Economics 3: Calculus 4: Drama 4: Chemistry 5 plus 1 Outstanding: Biology 1

Deputy Head Boy, Russell Green's Speech at Assembly last Friday

Good Morning Mr Mangan, Staff and Boys. I’d like to take this opportunity to say how humbled I am to be named Deputy Head Boy for 2018. I wouldn’t be the man that I am today if it wasn’t for the help and guidance my family, friends and teachers have given me. I hope to leave this school in nine months time knowing that I have done everything possible to make it a better place. To leave it “Better than Before”. My role is similar but not limited to my fellow year 13s. To act as a big brother, a role model and a leader to each one of you.

I am aware that many of you may not know who I am or what areas of school I am involved in. Firstly a little bit about myself. I was born and raised in Tauranga starting my schooling at Te Akau Ki Papamoa School before exchanging the beach for country in year four and moving to Omokoroa No 1 School where i stayed until the end of year 8. My years at primary and intermediate molded and shaped me for college life. Now I want to give you a taste of what my first four years at TBC were like. During those years I participated in a vast range of sports and house competitions. I have a huge passion for sport. My main focus is on running and hockey, I am apart of the XI Hockey Team, and hope to represent New Zealand in June for cross country. I treat my learning in the classroom the same as my sports. Knowing that through discipline and hard work I can achieve success. Applying myself in the classroom exercises my mind the same way running exercises my body. By doing this I have endorsed level one with Excellence and level two with Merit while remaining a centurion. Unfortunately I have had no involvement in the arts… although i am doing the teachers in this department a favour as you wont find a musical bone in my body.

As you’ve already heard there are endless opportunities at this school. Highlights for me have included a trip to Queenstown after competing at Athletics nationals in year 10, playing for the XI hockey team at Rankin cup last year and visiting such places as the New Zealand high performance centre and Adams Ave Training Facility. Queenstown was a place I’d never been to before and in those few days I got to share experiences with my teammates who I can now call close friends. Rankin Cup showed me the importance of teamwork and unity within a team. This was the first time I felt the brotherhood that exists at TBC. The High Performance Centre illustrated to me the rewards that can be gained from hard work and commitment.

Boys whether you want to believe it or not the 2018 school year has begun. So to the junior school make the most of the time you have at this school and put your hand up for as much as you can as I can assure you time goes a lot faster than you might think. Year 11s you are about to start your journey through NCEA, it’s crunch time. Don’t take this year for granted as it provides the foundations for level 2. To the year 12s you know how the cogs in the machine turn, so set your goals high and start working towards these now. In the words of an American President “never put off for tomorrow, what you can do today”. To the year 13s we’ve been together for over four years now and have shared a lot. We get one more year to spend together before we all go our separate ways so let’s make our last year together memorable and rewarding.

In keeping with true TBC tradition I would like to leave you with a quote from Footballer Ronaldinho “No matter who you are, it’s the simple things in life that lead you to believe you can achieve anything ” Boys take this as a challenge to focus on what is important and let this lead you to grow from a boy to man and leave this place better than before. Thank you.

Tauranga Boys' College Old Boys' Association

The Tauranga Boys’ College Old Boys’ Association began in 2008 when we celebrated our 50th Jubilee. Since that time we have developed an Old Boys' database to which is sent a newsletter every couple of months detailing what is going on at school as well as with our Old Boys scattered all around the globe.

Many of our students have family members who have previously attended Tauranga Boys' College and it would be great to have their details on our Database too. If you are an Old Boy or know Old Boys who are not on our database then please e-mail details to Rob Leslie on r.leslie@tbc.school.nz who is the Staff Representative on the Old Boys Committee.  If you are on Facebook the TBC Old Boys has a page there as well which you may find of interest.

These connections are of particular importance this year as we will celebrate our 60th Jubilee with a Weekend of celebrations at Labour Weekend (October 19th to 21st) so please pass on these details to all of your Old Boy mates.

NZ Secondary School Open Water Swimming Championships 2018

Tauranga Boys' College sent a team of three boys: Daniel Shanahan (Year 11), Matthew Wagstaff (Year 10), and Louis Fitzjohn (Year 10) to this year’s New Zealand Secondary Schools Open Water Swimming Championships 2018, which were held at Lake Taupo on 13-14 January 2018. The NZSS competition comprised the 1km, 2,5km and 5km open water swims around a special circuit laid out on the lake.

Race 1: 1km

200 competitors started the 1000m race which was won by Daniel Shanahan, with Matthew Wagstaff 9th and Louis Fitzjohn 10th . This was an excellent start to 2 days of racing with Daniel winning the 14-15 year category and Louis the 10-13 year category, scoring valuable points for the school as all of the boys scored points towards the school's total.

Race 2: 2.5km

The 2.5 km race had 238 swimmers on the start line and Tauranga Boys' College had both Daniel and Matthew competing. After a fine swim by both boys: Daniel  finished 2nd overall and 1st in his age category and Matthew Wagstaff finished 24th overall but scored valuable points with a 7th place in his age category.

Race 3: 5km

The final swim of the weekend was the 5km event which included the 5 km NZ Open Water championship race. Again Daniel and Matthew had excellent swims finishing 3rd and 6th respectively in their age categories and ensuring valuable points for the school.

Overall Result

The school achieved an impressive 3rd place overall in the NZ Secondary School Open Water National Championships, a very credible result from only 3 swimmers.  In 2019 we are hoping to take more of our recognised National Swimmers to the championships and try to improve on this year’s result.
