What the Best Gardeners Do Differently
While not everyone may share the same opinion as myself, I love efficiency. Finding efficiency in daily tasks and routines is like a good puzzle. And trust me, as much as I love figuring out how to make things more efficient, I don’t always stay on task… In gardening there are numerous ways to become more efficient. Organization is typically the ruling factor. Many times you can come across the best solutions or results you never would have found any other way. Not everyone loves organization, and would much rather “wing-it” to see what happens, and that’s ok. There’s no right or wrong way to garden. Surprises in the garden are both good and bad. We all prefer the good, but have to remember the bad results only make the challenge of gardening more interesting.

We often see gardening advice recommending to keep records. I admit, I don’t always love taking the time to jot down my observations of what did well, what didn’t, which fertilizer worked best, etc. However, I find it really does work. Even if you only take basic notes throughout each season you’ll be able to reflect and really look forward to what to do differently or similarly the following season. When I take notes, they’re simple, brief, and to the point. Another way to help with efficiency is to talk it out. Talking with other gardeners about what worked, what didn’t, and the reasons why or why not are very helpful and often overlooked. When you talk to others and even share with them your seasonal notes you often find commonalities and advice for one another. That, and it’s fun to talk to those who share the same interests.

Wasting time with a lot of back and forth can be exhausting. By back and forth, I mean a lot of things; going to and from the garage for tools, or to and from the garden center for plants, soil, and fertilizer. A great way to eliminate the back and forth is to plan tasks in bulk. Plan a day for emptying out pots, or cleaning out the flower beds and garden. Next, focus on planning everything you need to fill them back up; soil, fertilizer, and plants. Make lists, much like that of a grocery list to help you stay focused while shopping. Note specific needs for plants, how many for shade, how many to fill certain pots, or by how much space you have in the garden. Finally, plan a day to come visit us. Keep an open mind to try new things in spots you’ve been struggling with, and use your list to make sure you don’t leave without enough plants to complete your project. Finally comes the super fun job of planting. Many of us have projects that take multiple days to finish, so don’t over-do-it, plan realistically, and don’t forget to clean up.
Happy Gardening!
