Home gadget to school assistive technology

Visitors from The Netherlands visited Charlton Park Academy during Bett 2018, and enjoyed hearing presentations from staff and students about their use of assistive technology

'I've never seen a device change a person's ability that quickly.  It must be the first time in his life that he's been able to access so much independently, and all in the same day, he was so happy.  I think it actually blew his mind a bit, all these doors being opened' - Post 16 Teacher

At Charlton Park Academy, a Post 16 student with visual impairment had the opportunity to use the home device © Alexa during the day to support his communication and social skills. He adjusted to the device very quickly and with a little bit of practise to think about commands before making them, he could access vast amounts of material.  He set a timer, made a list, asked for music, asked questions on the internet, asked how to spell words, the definition of words, how to calculate a sum, what was on television that evening and what the weather was in London.

He instantly understood the concept of saying © Alexa’s name before asking for anything.  His teacher felt that it was a great device for his personal independence because the access was so accessible for him.

'It was a magical moment! The joy and satisfaction he got from being independent was amazing, and even the other students were so happy for him! He brightened and lifted everyone’s mood.' - Post 16 LSA
