Mordecai CAC January minutes:
Mordecai CAC minutes from the January 9th, 2018 meeting Co-Chair Aaron Afarian welcomed our new Co-Chair, Sean Farres. There were 31 people in attendance, and the December minutes were approved.
Police Report Officer Taylor said that crime has been down in the last two months for the MCAC. There were four car breakins. Neighbors brought up concern over the frequency of people running red lights at the intersection of Wake Forest Road and Glascock. RPD has a presence on twitter, Facebook, and snapchat.
Parks Report Chris Moore from the Halifax Community Park noted that camp reservations start in March for ages 6-12 (formerly 6-11).
Youth Build Patrick Buford, Operations Manager, introduced the Youth Build program. In partnership with the city, it offers construction job training while completing the GED high school equivalency. It is for 16-24 year olds in ZIP codes 27601, 27604, and 27610. The program is aimed for high school dropouts, those aging out of foster care, disabled, homeless, offenders, low income, or youth lacking communication skills. Finishers receive a certificate in construction. A stipend of $50/wk is provided for the first five weeks of GED classes, then $100/wk during construction training, followed by a $10/hr internship for three months working to build a Habitat for Humanity home. William Peace University Dr. Ralph, President, gave an overview of the recently created Campus Master Plan ‘Believe in Peace’. The main tenets are Immersive Learning, Innovative Partnerships, Strategic Growth, and Distinctive Identity.
• Plan to grow enrollment to about 1500.
• Added ten new majors in the last 12 months.
• Adding student residential and academic buildings on the existing property (no changes to Seaboard Station are planned).
• All designs are within the existing zoning structure.
• A parking deck will be built where the soft ball fields are now and sports will be moved off campus.
• There will be a walkway from Blount to Halifax connecting to Seaboard Station. Philip Bernard thanked Dr. Ralph for inviting input from the Person Street Partnership and Oakwood in the planning process.
Committee reports PSP, Philip Bernard. A contract has been made for the purchase of the former Retro Fitness site, no information on the potential buyer yet.
Parks, Joe Layton. Volunteers are always welcome. They are working with the city to place a pedestrian bridge over Marshall Creek.
Signs, Sean Farres. The city has provided us with two $1000 checks and signs are moving forward. There may be an auction held for the old signs.
Communication, Dana Deaton. The CAC meetings are being live-streamed on Facebook live beginning at the police report.
The next Mordecai CAC meeting will be held on Tuesday February 13th, 7:30 pm, at the Mordecai Historic Park Visitor’s Center. It will be a different meeting format with no structured content. Please come to this work session with ideas for what you would like to hear in 2018.
