Shipping with Amazon

Anybody that is surprised that Amazon is launching a service to utilize their logistics network for deliveries - is either naive or don't understand Amazon's operations and history.

Let me be clear - this test in Los Angeles is a very big deal and should concern the entire e-commerce industry. The selection of Los Angeles is not random but rather yet another history repeating itself moment. Amazon has a sortation location in Los Angeles and is using this plus their logistics footprint to test this programme. Remember that Amazon will utilize Flex drivers to supplement the workforce.

Amazon has always re-used capital invested into their ecosystem whether it is the third party marketplace or Amazon Web Service product once Amazon has reached scale the platform is opened for third-party usage. This obviously leads to UPS and FedEx stock price declines but Amazon has always looked after their own interests at the cost of partners.

The selection of Los Angeles is strategic for many reasons but it also designed to take away the attention of the impending launch from JD.com which is happening in Los Angeles. Amazon's dependence on their US retail results has to a degree lead to the launch of "Shopping with Amazon" in my opinion. Amazon can't afford to have any disruption in its core market and JD.com expertise in logistics make them a large threat if they roll-out logistics as part of their offering.

Amazon will undercut their service partners to drive down their own costs as they will be utilizing FedEx and UPS for a while. Shipping with Amazon gives Amazon a bargaining tool to use with their logistics partners and their willingness to negotiate with Amazon will be directly proportional to their long-term relationship with one of their larger volume partners.

Shipping with Amazon is all about control. Amazon wants to control the last mile to customers as currently, they are dependent on third-parties. Amazon wants to control the most important part of the purchase cycle.

Amazon has utilized logistics via Fulfillment by Amazon as a lever with third-party sellers. I won't be surprised if Shipping with Amazon is used a negotiation tool with brands who want to sell via Amazon's marketplace. Suddenly Amazon gets access to supply and demand information that currently is closely guarded by brands.
