NEWS FROM SVALBARD


MARPOL implementation

Norway will introduce regulations to fully implement MARPOL Annex IV in 2018. This means that cruise operators will need to fully comply with the protocol when operating along the Norwegian coast, and in Svalbard. 
 

 

NEWS FROM GREENLAND

ArcticWeb's voyage risk management tool

ArcticWeb has introduced a Voyage Risk Management (Assessment) Tool targeted at vessels operating in remote areas. Visit ArcticWeb to learn more.
 

New marine environment law

Dec 7, the Danish Parliament approved a new marine environment law which extends the regulatory zone in Greenland from three to 20 nautical miles from the coastline. The law covers the discharge of oil and sewage, among other things.

The Government of Nunavut has produced a useful booklet on polar bear safety and deterrents, available on AECO's website.

AECO's field staff online assessment is live


AECO members are signing up their staff for AECO's new Field Staff Online Assessment, and the first candidates have successfully completed the test. The assessment gives guides and expedition leaders the opportunity to test their knowledge of AECO guidelines and relevant regulations. Joint Arctic SAR TTX open for registration


The 2018 agenda focuses on On Scene Coordination (OSC), communications and innovative solutions for SAR, and this year's tabletop exercise will be run by the US Coast Guard. AECO members are invited to register here
 

ARCSAR network to enhance Arctic SAR


AECO will join forces with Search and Rescue (SAR) entities, authorities and researchers to enhance Arctic SAR through the new ARCSAR network. The ARCSAR project will run for five years and include a live exercise on a cruise vessel. Read more about ARCSAR here.

AECO presents Seasonal statistics and outlook


In December, AECO presented the first edition of the AECO Seasonal statistics and outlook, which shows developments in the Arctic expedition cruise industry. The document is available to all AECO members on AECO's Members only page (scroll down to "Resources reserved members"). 

 

CleanSeas efforts


AECO has an ongoing cooperation with UN Environment on the CleanSeas campaign to reduce plastic marine waste. AECO's CleanSeas working group has started to collect best practices and ideas on how to reduce the use of single-use plastics. 
 

New site guidelines

AECO has published site guidelines for Sallyhamna and Fuglehuken, raising the total number of site guidelines in Svalbard to 21 locations.
 

AECO infographics underway

The Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund has granted AECO NOK 200 000 (USD 24,000) to develop information posters and infographics that raise environmental awareness among tourists.
 

AECO secretariat update

On March 1, Ilja Leo Lang resumes his position at the AECO secretariat after an eight month family leave. AECO's secretariat currently has the following members of staff:
  • Frigg Jørgensen (Executive director)
  • Ilja Leo Lang (Assistant director)
  • Edda Falk (Communications manager)
  • M. Florencia Becherini (Administration and finance officer)
  • Ida Lund Winther (Area manager, temporary position)

AECO MEETINGS

Ice prediction workshop


On Jan 22, AECO provided industry input into the development of new products and services during the Arctic Sea Ice Prediction Stakeholders Workshop at Arctic Frontiers in Tromsø. 
 

SALIENSEAS workshop

The SALIENSEAS project sets out to shape Arctic metocean services for the future, and AECO is involved in the project's stakeholder advisory group. On Jan 25, AECO was part of a workshop to map the needs of end users such as the expedition cruise industry.
 

EC meeting

AECO's Executive committee (EC) met in Copenhagen Jan 18 - 19. Minutes are available on AECO's member only site.
