Hello MESA Families,
A few important items to share with you!
The flu is serious and has impacted our scholars and staff health and attendance. Please take time to talk to your scholars about the importance of washing their hands and taking care of themselves during the Wisconsin winter season including wearing coats, hats, gloves, mittens etc. We have had lots of scholars forget to bring their coats to school and many are often reluctant to wear them when they bring them. Washing our hands and covering our mouths when we have to cough are huge steps to helping us all remain healthy. If your scholar shows signs of flu or flu-like symptoms we ask that you keep them home and contact their health care physician. We have taken steps at our school to ensure that the building is sanitized and sprayed with disinfectant spray. Each class has hand sanitizer and the bathrooms are all equipped with warm water and soap. We want our scholars and staff to be healthy but if we are not we should not come to school. Please notify the school via telephone if your child needs to stay home due to illness.
Winter STAR testing!!! We made some major changes during the summer to our academic programs and our instructional delivery methods. I am very proud to share with you all that midway through the year our school, that’s right our school, showed an overall increase of more than ½ year of positive growth in both reading and math. This means that from August to January our average increase was more than 6 months of academic growth in the two tested subjects. Parents, thank you for making sure that your scholars are in school every day and prepared to work hard and learn. Thank you for making sure that you are following up with them on tough days and that you are monitoring their progress academically and socially. Thank you for putting their education as a top priority in your homes. It is paying off. We take the Forward test again in the spring and I am looking forward to reporting that our school grew more than 1 year in both math and reading- this is the true meaning of closing the achievement gap. It is not automatic and it will not be easily done but through a strong partnership between scholars, teachers, and parents, hard work, dedication, and teachers bringing rigorous lesson plans daily, we know we will succeed! If you have questions regarding STAR testing or academic instruction, please do not hesitate to contact me or our Learning Liaison, Clarissa Calloway. A special shout out to our 3rd grade scholars who grew ¾ of a year in only 5 months. Another special shout out to all middle school scholars who grew 6 months or more in reading. You guys worked hard and are deserving of recognition! Let’s keep the momentum strong as we prepare for the spring.
