Local Area Coordination in England and Wales

February 2018
Updates on Local Area Coordination and the work of the Network, and the areas implementing Local Area Coordination

Local Area Coordination contributing to strengths based work and transformation

Publications
There have been several publications since our last update that include that include examples of Local Area Coordination in action:

How-to guides for creating an asset-based area
Clive Miller offers the first in a series of How-to Guides, which puts flesh on the bones of the vision of Asset-Based Areas and how they can be developed. They  draw upon the Asset-based Area briefing paper written by Alex Fox, CE of Shared Lives Plus and his own publication. Read part 1 here

Community capacity and peer support
This guide describes how to define the Integrated Personal Commissioning cohort (including the creation of referral routes), the associated information governance implications of this, and the development of a robust information offer for people intended to benefit. Read the guide here

Growing innovative models of care
Nesta’s Health Lab, together with SCIE, Shared Lives Plus and PPL, published a new report about growing innovative models of care. The report explores what a truly person- and community-centred system of health, care and support would be like for those who use services and their carers. Read more here

Beyond direct payments
This guidance has been developed to make the case for new approaches to support people should a direct payment not be the preferred option. It challenges the view that support from micro-enterprises can only be purchased using a direct payment and offers alternative options. Read more here

Place based work
Some work continuing to build on thinking on the role of place based work and localism:

People Power – report from the Commission on the Future of Localism
This report includes evidence and ideas from policy-makers, local leaders, organisations and communities across the country and it highlights the need for radical action to strengthen localism. Read the report here

The Derby team are looking to recruit 2 Coordinators to cover Derwent and Sinfin. Derby City Council and Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group were one of the first areas to develop the Local Area Coordination approach in England and an exciting opportunity has arisen to join this established team as a direct result of Derby's successful bid to the Department of Education's Innovation Fund. This will see the team increase its remit to begin working with young people leaving care.

Both posts are on two year fixed term contracts closing date is 18th March.

IIDL exchange
Planning is now well underway for the 2018 International Initiative for Disability Leadership. As you may be aware the international exchange is being held in Sweden in June. Included in this year’s programme, exchange sites are not just taking place across Sweden, but also in Finland, Ireland, the UK and Scotland.

The Network has agreed to host an exchange with Inclusive Neighbourhoods and Thurrock between 28th and 30th May, ahead of the full exchange in Sweden. The focus of our exchange is on the impact and contribution to long term reform of Local Area Coordination, highlighting the experience in Thurrock and as such will take place in Thurrock.

As well as collectively sharing and learning from each other our exchange will also include:
  • An overview of Local Area Coordination in England and Wales
  • Thurrock Council as a practical example of Local Area Coordination in action – The importance of effective, connected leadership, from design to delivery and ongoing service reform.
  • Contribution to local re thinking of services and supports in local communities within strength-based context
  • An opportunity to meet Local Area Coordinators and local people with an experience of Local Area Coordination
  • An opportunity for participants to share their experiences with Local Area Coordination and systems reform– including expected participants from existing countries with LAC efforts such as Australia, Scotland, Ireland and possibly New Zealand, as well as Nordic countries with an interest.
  • Explore the value and ongoing development of a national Local Area Coordination Network in England and Wales and opportunities to grow international collaboration and ongoing connection/sharing of resources
You can sign up for the exchange and find out more here.
