Security and equality for sustainable futures

Registrations open for the 2018 World Social Science Forum

Early-bird registration for the 2018 World Social Science Forum is now open. The World Social Science Forum will take place from 25-28 September 2018, in Fukuoka, Japan, on the theme of 'Security and Equality for Sustainable Futures'.

The growing complexity of the challenges facing societies worldwide has given rise to increasing concerns about security, across a range of different sectors. Life in the Anthropocene era is calling into question the sustainability of human activities, with critical implications for equity, and for food, water and energy security. From issues of freedom and democracy to cyber- and bio-warfare, the changing nature of conflict highlights the complexity and inter-relatedness of old and new threats to human security. It is against this backdrop that Agenda 2030 sets out to ‘secure our planet’, while ensuring that ‘no-one will be left behind’.

Over the course of four days, Forum participants will examine various dimensions of security, interrogating how the demand for security relates to societies’ quest for equality and sustainability. Alongside leading plenary speakers, presenters will look into approaches, trends, and responses from different sectors. The WSS Forum 2018 will identify critical research priorities on security, as well as data and knowledge gaps, globally and in specific regions. Taking place under the auspices of the International Science Council (ISC), to be formed following the merger of the ISSC and the International Council for Science (ICSU), the 2018 Forum will provide an international platform for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research to contribute to transformations to a more sustainable world.

A call for individual abstracts for participation in Specific Panels, Topical Sessions and Poster sessions is now open, and a grants programme is available to support the participation of early-career social scientists from low- and lower-middle-income countries.

Key dates:
17 March 2018 – Deadline for paper submission and application for grant programmes
15~20 May 2018 – Paper decisions notified
5 June 2018 – Deadline for abstract author’s registration and payment
30 June 2018 – Early-bird registration closes
31 August 2018 – Online registration closes – all later registrations will be processed on-site

Berlin Summer School in Social Sciences

Linking Theory and Empirical Research: 8th Berlin Summer School in Social Sciences

The 8th Berlin Summer School in Social Sciences takes place from 16-26 July 2018. The summer school aims to support young researchers by strengthening their ability in linking theory and empirical research. The Berlin Summer School is co-funded by the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (BGSS) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. It is open to up to 60 PhD candidates, advanced master students, and young postdocs. Applications can be submitted online until 31 March 2018.

Catch up on the latest from the Transformations to Sustainability programme

The ISSC's T2S programme has had a busy start to 2018, as the programme's three funded networks begin their final year of operation. You can find out more about the research under the programme in our recent video on Transformations in Practice. Meet researchers and hear more about the transformations to sustainability they are researching - from opening up seed systems in Argentina, to transitions to organic agriculture in Zimbabwe, to the social impacts of green transformations in China - in a series of short video interviews.

A round-up of recent publications by members of the community includes articles on cultural transformations, the need for the environmental humanities, the social effects of global trade, and much, much more.

We also found out about key priorities for cities research to be debated at next week's CitiesIPCC conference from World Social Science Fellow Aliyu Barau.

Call for nominations: Scientific Committee of the World Data System

ISSC Members are invited to submit nominations for the World Data System (WDS) Scientific Committee, an Interdisciplinary Body of the International Council for Science (ICSU). Its main mission is to support ICSU’s vision by promoting long-term stewardship of, and universal and equitable access to, quality-assured scientific data and data services, products, and information across a range of disciplines in the natural and social sciences, and the humanities. The Scientific Committee is the governing board of WDS and it is composed of internationally recognized and leading researchers and experts in all aspects of scientific data. Nominations should be submitted no later than 5 March 2018.

WDS Data Stewardship award for early career researchers

WDS has also announced an award to highlight exceptional contributions to the improvement of scientific data stewardship by early career researchers, through their engagement with the community, academic achievements and innovations. The 2018 award includes participation, travel and lodging at the SciDataCon Conference (part of International Data Week, 5–8 November in Gaborone, Botswana), where the award will be presented, as well as a prize.

A panel of members of the WDS Scientific Committee will designate the winner of the 2018 Award. Find out more and nominate by 21 May 2018.

Make replication studies a normal part of science, says Dutch Academy report

The systematic replication of other researchers’ work should be a normal part of science, says a recent advisory report by The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Towards this aim, the report recommends that funding agencies and scientific journals should also make it easier for researchers to carry out and publish replication studies. In addition, better research methods and more transparent study reporting will improve the reproducibility of research results.
