Volunteer sessions March/April 2018

Dear <<First Name>>

Because of the very cold weather we have been having this spring, we are postponing our bee and bat walks that were due to start on Sunday 4 March until Sunday 1 April. We expect the bats will be tucked up in their roosts until it gets a bit warmer and there are insects on the wing to eat. Similarly, we are unlikely to see early emerging bees until the weather improves. If you have signed up to any of these walks I will be contacting you separately.
The Bats in the Barbican walk and talk on 19 April will go ahead as planned.

New dates are:
Starting Sunday 1st April - Bat Survey Walk meet 19.30

These will take place every Sunday and follow one of four different routes each week to record the presence of bats across the City. We will have exclusive access to City gardens after lock up and we will be using sound recording bat meters to identify different species. The walk will take about an hour.
If you are interested in participating in this weekly survey please get in touch for more information on routes and times as they will get later as the evenings draw out.

Starting Sunday 1st April  - Bee walk 10.00 - 11.30
First Bee Walk of the year to record early emerging bumble bees. Meet Bunhill Fields and walk to Christchurch Greyfriars via a number of City Gardens. Bee Walks take place on the first Sunday of each month until October. Data is collected for the Bumble Bee Conservation Trust

Thursday 19 April 19.00 - 21.00 Bats in the Barbican
There are still some places available - so come and be amazed at the bats living around the Barbican Estate. There will be a short talk on bat ecology followed by a walk through the Barbican gardens using bat detectors to pick up feeding calls.

New opportunity to volunteer
We are looking for volunteers to help with our regular weekly gardening sessions with the reception class at St Paul's Cathedral School. Please let me know if you would like to spend around 40 minutes a week in the company of 20 very enthusiastic young gardeners as we explore the wonder of worms, growing potatoes, watching beans sprout and generally having a good time outdoors in the playground from 13.40 - 14.20 every Wednesday. We provide all the materials, lesson plan and session leaders. No experience is necessary.
Please let me know if you would like to come to a sample session.

Save the date

London is one of the 60+ cities around the world participating in the City Nature Challenge
http://citynaturechallenge.org/ over the weekend of 27-30 April. The weekend will be led by the Natural History Museum and there will be lots of opportunities for discovering and identifying plants and animals in local parks and gardens across the capital. If you would like to help plan a bioblitz in a City garden or join us over the weekend please get in touch.
