More Thoughts on Lent

What is Lent?
Lent is the season of the church year in which Christians deepen their struggle against all things that draw us away from devotion to God and love of neighbor. The forty days of lent (not including Sundays) is a season of preparation in which we acknowledge those things in our lives that inhibit our involvement in God’s redeeming movement in the world. During Lent, Christians call on each other to deepen their faith practices in order that this time of solemnity and devotion might lead to deeper joy in the season of Easter.

The word, “Lent” means to lengthen. It comes as the icy chills of winter give way to the hope of spring and the days are noticeably longer. Melting snow and a fallow earth getting ready to release new life correlate with the Christian story.  The icy grips of death loosen to give way to new life. That which is buried in the ground is remembered. The seed will sprout. Jesus who died, emerges from the grave.

During Lent, the people of God reflect on the meaning of baptism. We are reminded that God joined us with Christ’s death and resurrection, setting us free from sin, death, and the power of all evil. Like the seed of the earth, we are planted “in Christ,” taken to the grave of Jesus. We emphasize confession and repentance as acts that refocus our attention on the baptismal promises of resurrection for those who are in Jesus. Returning to the good news that we are in Christ through Holy Baptism, we confess our sins--not to receive forgiveness, but because God has already forgiven all who are baptized into Christ’s death and resurrection. In this way, the acts of repentance become creedal confessions of faith in which we say, “I believe that God, because of Christ’s death and resurrection, has forgiven me. Therefore, I have confidence to name that which is within me that draws me away from God.” Naming these things, we are empowered to turn to new ways. We are set free to love the neighbor and to serve God in the world.

The Practice of “Giving Up” Something
Many Christians in the world practice a discipline of “giving up” something for Lent. Some give up meat. Others give up television, soda, facebook, or other forms of consumption. This practice is designed to put a disruption in the life that becomes a reminder to focus instead on a practice of faith. The disruption is intended to prompt the person toward a chosen act of discipleship: prayer, contemplation, the reading of scripture, service of the neighbor, advocacy, generosity, or more.  In this sense, the giving up is done in order that something else may be taken on.

Spiritual Growth: PoWeR SuRGe
Lent is a process that, when entered and engaged, yields spiritual growth. Discipleship practices are central to that experience. The acronym “PoWeR SuRGe” allows us to remember faith practices central to spiritual growth and development. Looking at the consonants, we are reminded to do the following:

Pray without ceasing.
Worship weekly.
Read and study the Scriptures daily.
Serve others without expectation of return.
Build Relationships that foster faith.
Give generously.

NOTE: PoWeRSuRGe is an acronym that I hope you will become very familiar with this year. It’s a guide to spiritual growth which we will be emphasizing at COR as we move from thinking of ourselves as a congregation of church members to a congregation of disciples.

EASTER FLOWERS

It’s time to place orders for Easter flowers.  Please see the order forms on the round table in the narthex or in your church bulletin. Orders must be turned into the office by Sunday, March 25.
DISCIPLES NEEDED!

That headline shouldn’t surprise you—you’re all disciples of Jesus, and you’re always needed to do God’s work and will in the world. In this case, though, I’m looking for 13 COR members to portray the original twelve disciples PLUS Jesus himself.

Our Maundy Thursday worship will center around “The Living Last Supper,” a drama in which each of the disciples wonders aloud about Jesus’ statement that someone at the table will betray him.

It will not be necessary to memorize your parts. Rehearsal time will be minimal. If you’re interested, please sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board in the narthex. Actors of all ages and genders are welcome.

LAY MINISTRY SIGNUP

The sign up genius self sign up for Lay Ministry is working great.  A lot of the assignments are being filled this way and it results in far fewer schedule conflicts.  Any opening that are not selected are still assigned as in the past.  If you know you have a conflict for particular dates, let the office know so you are not scheduled.

To take advantage of this new method, click on the link below to sign up for Lay Ministry slots in March.

LENTEN WORSHIP SERIES
The Ten Commandments
Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.

Our God is a God of relationship. That’s why God created us—to be in a right relationship with him, with each other and with all of creation. Unfortunately, the pesky reality of sin entered the world and damaged all of the relationships which God intended to be healthy, strong and loving. The world, and everything and everyone in it, is broken—in one way or many.

We know that Christ’s death and resurrection ultimately reconcile us to God, restoring our relationship to the one God longs to have with his people. But God has also provided us with a set of rules for life meant to guard and protect these important relationships, so that they may be enjoyed as God intends.

We know these life rules as the Ten Commandments. Please join us each Wednesday evening, February 21-March 21 at 7 p.m.  Each week we’ll explore two of the Commandments. We’ll discover that the Commandments are not rules intended to spoil our fun or cramp our styles. Rather, they’re instructions from the One who created us and knows us best—instructions for living in right relationship with God and with each other—instructions that will lead us to the life God created us for.

I invite you to make mid-week Lenten worship a priority for you and your family. It’s a discipline which will enrich your Lenten journey and make your resurrection life more meaningful and joyful.

In Christ’s service,

- Pastor Kimberly

SOPHIA MOVIE NIGHT
Monday, Feb 26

6:30 p.m.
Church of the Resurrection

Join SOPHIA, Church of the Resurrection’s social justice group, as we see and talk about the movie “Halfway.” “Halfway” is the fictional story of a recently released convict (played by Quinton Aaron, best known for his role in “The Blind Side”) who faces the prospect of enduring ties with his old gang world. At the same time, he is struggling to adapt to a life on probation as the only black man in a rural white Wisconsin farm town. The film’s subject, Byron, finds himself halfway between childhood and assuming the full responsibilities of adult life, just as he is halfway between prison and freedom and, perhaps, only halfway to being considered a full human being.

Christ the King Lutheran Church, Delafield, to host a Beer & Hymns Event in conjunction with The Beer & Hymns Band from Church of the Resurrection, Pewaukee

Christ the King will host a hymn singing event at Beer Snobs Ale & Eats in Hartland, on Sunday, March 4, at 4 p.m. All are invited to join in this gathering of people who enjoy singing and community.

Beer & Hymns is designed to bring together people who like the idea of singing old-school hymns in a casual environment, while enjoying a beer, soda or bite to eat. Beer & Hymns isn’t a church service and won’t include preaching or proselytizing. Instead, it’s just a good old-fashioned singalong in an all-inclusive space for people from all walks of life. All are welcome, including families.

Beer Snobs Ale & Eats is located at 122 Cottonwood Ave in Hartland. Advance registration for Beer and Hymns is not required. For more information about the event, visit www.churchoftheresurrection.org, 262-691-7700.
FOOD PACKING OPPORTUNITY

Christ Our Savior in Sussex is hosting Food Packing for El Salvador throughout the season of Lent. We have signed up to send a group of volunteers on Sunday, March 18. Volunteers are invited to gather after the 10:00 worship service for a light lunch, and we will leave church by 11:40 to arrive at Christ Our Savior by 12:00. We will pack food for approximately 45 minutes and the cost per person is $10 (which covers the cost of the food you will be packing). You can sign up to volunteer at the Welcome Desk in the narthex. If you have questions, please contact Tiffany Kollmeyer.
