PEI Theatre Industry Summit March 14

What is your vision for the future of theatre on PEI? The PEI Theatre Industry Summit is your opportunity to get together with others involved in theatre in Prince Edward Island to create a shared vision and start making it come true.

CreativePEI is hosting this half-day event at the Haviland Club in Charlottetown on Wednesday, March 14 from 8:45 to 12:30. The summit will involve facilitated discussions tackling four big questions:
  1. What do we want PEI's Theatre Industry to look like in five years?
  2. What are the steps we need to take to get there?
  3. What will the labour needs be and what do we have to do to fill them?
  4. What are the immediate actions we need to take to get started?
The Theatre Industry Summit is open to:
  • Theatre artists (Performers, Directors, Choreographers, Designers, etc.)
  • Stagehands, Technicians
  • Administrators
  • Producers
  • Playwrights, Composers
  • Teachers and Students of theatre
Please go to our Facebook event and indicate whether you plan to come so we can get a sense of numbers. It's going to be an exciting time. We hope to see you there.

What is the Purpose of Cultural Activities?

Culture Track 2017 is an excellent new study from the United States. It shows some major shifts in the public's attitude to culture.

According to the study, the word "culture" has become so democratized and inclusive as to become virtually meaningless. "Audiences in 2017 do not place priority or meaning in whether an activity is 'culture' or not: it can be anything from Caravaggio to Coachella, Tannhäuser to taco trucks."

But the study also points out that, while people may no longer care what culture is, they really value what culture does, namely:

  1. Transforming perspectives
  2. Building community
  3. Educating the public
  4. Fostering empathy

"Audiences believe that culture is a positive force. But in this complex moment when the value of culture for its own sake is not a given, it is up to cultural organizations to powerfully articulate and deliver on their essential purpose and impact."
