Upcoming Event!
Sustainable Building Innovations Expo & Awards
April 7th, 1-5 pm
Ashurst Hall (Building 11), Northern Arizona University

In This Issue...
Innovations Expo & Awards Ceremony!

This year, the Sustainable Building Program will be adding a new twist to the annual Sustainable Building Award Ceremony with the addition of an Innovations Expo! The Expo will include vendor booths, a student poster competition and educational sessions. There will also be displays of the awarded projects, tiny houses to tour and a bingo game!
The goal of the Expo is to showcase innovative sustainable building approaches and technologies that local homeowners, designers and contractors may not know about. We hope to spread the word and increase awareness about these new sustainable products and methods with the building and real estate community.

We are excited to be working with our event partners Green NAU, NAU Green Jacks and Hope Construction to bring you this event!
More information on hosting a booth, sponsoring the event or participating in the poster competition can be found here.
Innovative Product and Service Booths-

Learn more about new sustainable building products like Earth-Friendly Block, an insulated concrete form that is made from 87% locally-collected post-consumer expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) and ThermoDrain, a drain water heat recovery system that captures heat from waste water! Representatives from Rooftop Solar and Central Arizona Supply will be highlighting innovations in their product lines, Northern Arizona Pollinator Habitat Initiative will be showcasing their efforts and more!
Tiny Houses-

Come learn about tiny house construction and permitting when you visit the tiny houses outside the event!

Photo: Hope Construction's Tiny House will be awarded at the Ceremony and will be open for tours.
Educational Sessions-

During the Expo, educational sessions on topics such as off-grid living, construction waste recycling and reuse, and how energy efficiency, comfort and good indoor air quality are related, will be offered.
Melisa Camp, a realtor and sustainable real estate educator from Phoenix, will be speaking about how agents, home owners, lenders and appraisers can work together to sell homes with energy efficient, green, sustainable and smart home features for a higher price. She will also be hosting a booth, with information about the workshops her company, Elite Education, provides for real estate professionals on sustainable building topics.
Student Poster Competition-

As part of the Expo, a student poster competition is being held. Students were tasked with identifying existing innovative solutions to sustainable building issues that may not have reached the building industry in our community, and presenting them in
poster format. Prizes of $300, $200 and $100 will be awarded for 1st - 3rd place submissions. Learn from these research projects and then cast your vote for your favorite poster! More information about how to participate in the competition is here.
Displays of Awarded Projects-

Twenty-five projects will be awarded this year! Learn from the owners, designers and builders that have made these projects happen! Awardees will be presenting information about their projects in informal table displays and will be available to answer your questions about the methods and materials that were used as well as the lessons learned.
Awards Ceremony-

The Awards Ceremony is an opportunity to celebrate the great work that was done to realize the projects that were certified by the Sustainable Building Program in the past year. Join us in recognizing the creativity, hard work and dedication that saw these projects through to completion.
Stay tuned for the March CCSBP newsletter that will highlight the projects that will be awarded.

The Importance of Beauty
Thursday, March 1st 2018, 6pm-7:30pm
Montoya Community Center
245 N Thorpe Rd, Flagstaff, AZ 86001

What is the meaning of beauty and how has this meaning changed throughout time? What does beauty mean to our culture?

Dr. Sandra Lubarsky states: “Beauty is not a mere, sentimental human opinion…it’s what we name those experiences of life that encourage and support freshness and zest so that life can continue.”

Join Friends of the Rio on Thursday, March 1st as we hear from Dr. Sandra Lubarsky on the importance of beauty and how our disconnect with beauty is part of the story of how we have been talked out of caring for the natural world.

Sandra B. Lubarsky is a writer and retired professor whose research interests focus on the intersection of aesthetics and sustainability. She founded the master’s program in Sustainable Communities at Northern Arizona University and directed the Sustainable Development program at Appalachian State University in North Carolina.
