CTSA Scholars Program for Senior Post-Doctoral/
Junior Faculty in Clinical and Translational Research

The CTSA Scholars Program provides up to two years of support for partial salary, travel, training, and mentoring for scholars with demonstrated potential to attain independence as clinical and translational scientists. The goal of the program is support scholars as they advance in their research careers, and to provide them with the knowledge and skills to develop into successful, independent researchers who will go on to receive "next level" federal funding. The program emphasizes productivity, collaborative research, and career development. The selected scholars will be supported through funding from the CTSI.

Post-doctoral researchers holding faculty appointments as Instructor or Assistant Professor with at least one year of full-time research experience or its equivalent in clinical/translational research are eligible to apply. Individuals who have already received NIH K or R awards, or equivalent from other federal agencies, are not eligible. Scholars from any unit or school in the University, or with appointments at CTSI-affiliated NYC Health + Hospitals institutions, are eligible to apply. Applicants must have the support of their research advisor/mentor and department chair/division chief, and be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Applications are due on April 6th by 5:00PM. Applicants and their mentors must be prepared to accept funding for a start date of July 1st, 2018. Please contact Program Manager, Claudia Galeano, if you have any questions. Application material and additional information can be found on the CTSI Scholars website.

CTSI Funding Opportunity
Request for Opioid Research Pilot Project Applications
Reminder

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is seeking applications for pilot projects aimed at reducing opioid use to prevent abuse in patients. The intent of the NYU CTSI Opioid Research Pilot Project Awards is to support inter-departmental collaborative scientific studies for one year to enable the collection of preliminary/pilot data that will serve as the foundation for robust research projects that are competitive for external peer review full-scale funding. Eligible projects may focus on any area with the potential to have a large impact on the use of opioids, including studies on effective, non-additive pain management techniques to reduce opioid need and novel addiction treatments. Priority will be given to collaborations across departments and schools. Awards up to $100,000 will be distributed to support one-year projects, beginning June 1, 2018.

A one-page letter of intent (~500 words) indicating the purpose of the purposed project must be submitted no later than 5:00PM on March 2. Those invited to apply will be notified by March 16 and must submit a full application by 5:00PM, April 13.
This call for applications is aimed at these phases of translational research:
  • T2 translational research: focuses on early clinical and translational studies using human material or subjects
  • T3 translational research: the translation, diffusion, and adoption of evidence-based health strategies and interventions into community and practice settings (representative methods include community-based participatory research, practice-based research, comparative effectiveness, behavioral economics, and implementation and dissemination research)
Criteria - The primary criteria for funding of these awards include:
  1. Quality of the science proposed
  2. Impact of the proposed research on the use of opioids
  3. Potential of the applicants to acquire future independent funding for a future related project
  4. In accordance with the objectives of the CTSAs, priority will be given to the development of novel technologies, methodologies and feasible approaches that stimulate inter-disciplinary collaborations that test generalizable solutions to translational research problems
Eligibility - This competition is open to all investigators at the School of Medicine, as well as the other schools and colleges of NYU, members of NYC Health + Hospitals with NYU faculty appointments or who are working in partnership with one or more NYU faculty investigators, and researchers at the Nathan Kline Institute. Eligible applicants include all faculty members. Students, residents and beginning post-doctoral fellows are not eligible. For questions, contact Keith Brown | 212-263-2652. Please complete the Letter of Intent Form here.

CTSI Pre- and Post-Doctoral Training Support Program in Clinical and Translational Research (TL1)

The TL1 program will provide up to two years of stipend, training and mentoring while emphasizing the scholars' success within their established research area. The fundamental goal of the program is to help and support scholars as they advance in their research careers, and to provide them with the knowledge and skills to eventually develop into successful, independent researchers. Trainees should be actively engaged in clinical or translational research. Trainees from any unit or school in the University, or with appointments at CTSI-affiliated NYC Health + Hospitals institutions, are eligible to apply. Applicants must have the support of their research advisor/mentor and department chair or division chief, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
We particularly encourage applications from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. Please note: We have two distinct slots - predoctoral and early-stage post-doctoral.
Applications for CTSI TL1 funding will be due by 5:00PM on Friday, March 23. Predoctoral applicants and their mentors must be prepared to accept funding as early as April 1, 2018. Post-doctoral applicants and their mentors must be prepared to accept funding as early as September 1, 2018. Please contact the Program Manager, Claudia Galeano, if you have any questions. Click here for additional information about the program and application materials.

Call for Nominations:
Translational Research Mentorship Awards

As an acknowledgment of the value of the CTSI places on mentorship, Translational Research Education and Careers (TREC) created the Translational Research Mentorship Award to recognize outstanding mentors. Please take this opportunity to nominate someone who has helped you and others develop your careers and advance the field of medical research. The awardee will be recognized with a generous gift certificate and plaque at an upcoming Translational Research in Progress seminar.
Superb mentors in translational research from NYU School of Medicine or any other Schools or Colleges of NYU are eligible for this award. Mentors at one of the NYU-CTSI Health + Hospitals partner facilities are also eligible. We anticipate that awardees will have had a sustained career commitment to mentoring, a significant positive impact on their mentees' careers, and through their mentees, will have advanced research and patient care in the field of translational research.
To nominate one's mentor, the mentee must submit a letter to the Award Subcommittee that specifically details how the mentor:
  1. Is a role model for effective mentoring in translational science
  2. Creates a learning environment where translational research is valued and developed to its fullest potential
  3. Builds strong productive relationships that support personal and career development
  4. Fosters life-long learning to maximize individual mentee's potential
  5. Conducts fair and objective assessments of mentee's performance and gives effective feedback to promote growth
  6. Advocates for mentee, provides guided participation in professional networks, helps with scholarship skills, and displays incidental comments and tacit behaviors to support learning
The letter should also identify up to five papers written by the mentor that demonstrate influence in the field of translational research and underline the mentor's role in the success of a trainee.
Please be illustrative when writing your nomination letter (recommend 2-3 pages). Submit your nomination letter here by 5pm on Friday, March 23rd. If you have any questions about the application process, contact Claudia Galeano.
