The Good, Bad and Ugly

It's all happening here

First the Good!
GWC is thrilled to have Supervisor Damon Connolly and his aide Mary Sackett at our APRIL 4 meeting. We are also over the moon that Melissa Nelson of the Cultural Conservancy will also be there to teach us about the indigenous basket weavers who lived in the Gallinas Creek watershed.

What do these two speakers have in common? Are you ready to hear about Floating Island Phase 2? Together we will discuss how to move forward to heal the water quality issues in the Marin Lagoon in a way that catalyzes indigenous cultural as well as environmental benefits.

This is a meeting you won't want to miss. April 4.

And now for the Bad....
GWC learned via alert NextDoor neighbors that San Rafael's Department of Public Works sprayed the creek on Freitas Parkway with Roundup "to remove weeds in the cracks in the cement" early on Tues and Wed morning Feb. 20 and 21. Roundup is particularly toxic to aquatic organisms and more information is coming out about its toxicity to humans and pets. A group has formed to push San Rafael to ban this product's use.  GWC reps met with them and sent in a formal letter to San Rafael's City Council, If you would like to help this effort, please contact Judy.

And the Ugly? TRASH!
CleanMarin has launched a new program to help keep our streets and waterways clear of trash--and you can help! First, take this Survey on pollution prevention and awareness--quick and easy. This will help CleanMarin target the message and bridge the gaps. Next, see where you can help keep an area clean by adding yourself to Adopting a Spot! We all do better when our area is free of trash.

Another Survey--from MTC

What will the Bay Area look like in 2050? MTC and ABAG want to hear from you as they develop a blueprint for how our region lives, works and plays in the decades ahead. This survey is your chance to state what you would like to see in 30 years, or what you are afraid will happen, if current trends continue. Speak your mind. Don't be afraid to go off script here.

Monthly Meetings
The GWC Board meets on the first Wednesday of the month in the Community Room of the Northgate MallEnter by the mall Food Court; turn R immediately; follow corridor to elevator; go to 2nd floor.  Meetings are from 7 - 9 pm and everyone is welcome.  We discuss matters of interest concerning our local creek and bay area watersheds. The next meeting is March 7, 2018.

Events Calendar
GWC keeps a calendar of other watershed important events, locally and internationally here. For example, did you know that Fix A Leak Week is March 19-25, 2018? And World Water Day is March 22, 2018

Taking it to the Creeks

On Feb. 28, GWC took 15 Marin Academy students and two adult teachers on an insider's view of the watershed via kayak on the north fork. They helped us all  by taking out the trash accumulating in the marsh.  Trash going down the street drains and blowing out of trucks ends up in our marsh, bay and ocean, harming wildlife. Students removed 20 bags of glass and plastic bottles, balls and styrofoam weighing over 100 pounds. Marin County Parks took care of getting those bags out of the dock area. Thank you Marin Academy and County Parks!

Game of Floods Anyone?
Marin Academy students also recently participated in Marin County's own Game of Floods, as have many other community members. The game is now available as a free download for any group to play. Think planning for Sea Level Rise is easy? Give it a try and see!
