EXTRA CREDIT

Three cheers for UTM's United Way Campaign organizers and contributors! The 2017 campaign surpassed its target, raising $74,280 to support United Way of Peel Region programs.

APPOINTMENTS

Shashi Kant
Professor Shashi Kant, director of UTM's Master of Science in Sustainability Management program, has been named to the Order of Ontario. A specialist in the economics of sustainable forest management, Kant is among 23 recipients (including three U of T researchers) who will be honoured for contributing a lasting legacy in Ontario. The Lieutenant Governor will bestow the honour during an investiture ceremony at Queen's Park on February 27, 2018.

Ahmed Azhari has been appointed interim Director of Utilities. Azhari is a senior project manager, mechanical & electrical, with UTM’s Department of Facilities, Management and Planning. Azhari fills the position previously held by Vikhas Mehta, who has accepted a position with Victoria College.

IN MEMORIUM

Lois Weir, one of the founding staff members of Erindale College, passed away February 2, 2018. Weir served in the Office of the Dean with Principal E.A. Robinson and Principal Paul Fox before moving to U of T's downtown Toronto campus, where she served as associate dean with the Faculty of Music. Weir's life will be celebrated at a reception at Toronto's Old Mill on Friday, March 2, 2018.

Assistant Professor Sonia Kang of the Department of Management appeared on TVO’s The Agenda to discuss sexual harassment in the workplace.
 
Political science professor David Wolfe wrote a column for the Globe and Mail on the effect of consumer demand on the carbon economy.
 
Science Magazine  covered a study by Associate Professor Nicola Lacetera of the Department of Management of psychological techniques to increase cord blood donations to blood banks.
Cheryl Thompson
Department of Visual Studies lecturer Cheryl Thompson covered the history of Aunt Jemima's Kitchens and southern nostalgia for Spacing Magazine.

Forbes Magazine covered research by visual studies instructor Lisa Trentin about how people with physical disabilities were depicted in ancient Greek and Roman art.
Akwasi Owusu-Bempah
In coverage of Canada's plan to decriminalize marijuana, assistant professor of sociology Akwasi Owusu-Bempah was interviewed by several media outlets, including CityTV, CBC's The Current and the Ottawa Citizen, about amnesty for those charged with or convicted of drug possession.

Management professor Lisa Kramer appeared on Global News to discuss what the recent drop in the Dow means to Canadian investors.

Associate Professor Andreas Park of the Department of Management was interviewed by Global News about transaction fees associated with cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.
