Policy updates

1. Federal Budget 2018: On February 27th, the Liberal Government released their 2018 Federal Budget. Check out this week's Policy update to learn about the impacts of the budget's tax measures on small businesses, new investments and our reaction. Click HERE to read more.

2. Section 232 and the Steel Industry: The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce is concerned about the implications of the United States Department of Commerce’s recommendations to President Trump, under a NAFTA Section 232 investigation concerning the Steel and Aluminum Industries. President Trump has been provided three significantly punitive options to apply Tariffs and quotas on Canadian Steel imports, which will cause significant disruption to the Hamilton economy and supply chains. Click HERE to read more & here for media coverage.

3. Buy America Policies and Ontario's Rebuttal: The Province of Ontario is preparing retaliatory measures against states like New York  and Texas who have proposed exclusionary "Buy American" policies, putting a restriction on Canadian Steel in public procurement. Click HERE to read more.

Ontario’s Bay Area Celebrates Supercluster Announcement
Leaders from Hamilton and Burlington gathered at McMaster Innovation Park last week to celebrate the recent announcement of Canada’s Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster based in Southern Ontario. This collaborative, multi-year initiative is the cornerstone of a broad scale effort to position and promote Canada as a global leader in advanced manufacturing enabled by Industry 4.0 processes and technologies. “Our chamber’s role is to engage local area businesses keen to benefit from new game-changing investments in the future of manufacturing,” said Hamilton Chamber CEO Keanin Loomis. The Honourable Karina Gould, Minister of Democratic Institutions (pictured), spoke on behalf of the federal government and emphasized the supercluster’s predicted impact on job creation for middle class Canadians. She also underscored the bay area’s role alongside other leading innovation hubs, including Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo.
