Hi there,
When youth are disconnected from both their families and schools, who is responsible for teaching them about their sexual health? Young people living in juvenile detention facilities are at greater risk for teen pregnancy, STDs and HIV than their peers, and yet are often undereducated and have little access to resources about safe sexual practices.
Healthy U, a tablet-based app, was created to help bridge this information gap. The program educates young males in juvenile detention facilities about puberty, sexual health, sexual consent, and healthy relationships through games, interactive scenarios and short videos. Oregon Youth Authority, in partnership with WestEd and Efficacity, is implementing a multi-year study to evaluate the impact of Healthy U in five juvenile correctional facilities across the state, where nearly 10% of young men are already fathers and 90% of focus group participants reported no previous sexual health education.
Join us for an exciting webinar on Tuesday, March 27th at 11:00am PST, where representatives from all three partner organizations will discuss this study, as well as:
- How Healthy U works.
- How the app was specifically tailored for juvenile offenders.
- How youth within the juvenile justice system contributed to the app’s development.
- Implementation strategies for sexual health education in secure settings.
- Lessons learned implementing Healthy U in Oregon.
