Mario Cader-Frech joins MoMA's
Latin American and Caribbean Fund

 
YES Founder Mario Cader-Frech joins as a member of the Latin American and Caribbean Fund at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In this position Cader-Frech aims to share his knowledge of contemporary art production in El Salvador. He shares, "it is important that we bring art from El Salvador to the forefront at major institutions such as MoMA, who in turn support, show and eventually help better establish artists' work within the canon of art history."

"From Here to There" featuring three Salvadoran Artists
for Artesur's  VideoSUR


February 16 - March 12, 2018
 
"From Here to There," curated by YES Contemporary's Claire Breukel and Lucas Arevalo, features three video works by Salvadoran artists Crack RodríguezVeronica Vides and Victor Hugo Portillo, as part of VideoSUR, a video art program organized by Artesur at “Le Tarmac” Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France.
 
Artesur’s video program showcases video exhibitions by several independent Latin American arts organizations: La Embajada, Proyectos Ultravioleta, TEOR/éTica, Despacio, Espira, (BIS) Oficina de proyectos, CaldodeCultivo, Micromuseo, Residência Artística Cambridge, OLHO, Galería Ruby, Arte Actual FLACSO, BARRO Arte Contemporáneo, Die Ecke and La Ene. 

Salvadoran artist Abigail Reyes is featured in Despacio's exhibition program, and Melissa Guevara shows with La Embajada. See the full program here.

BEATRIZ CORTEZ WINS REMA HORT MANN FOUNDATION AWARD, USA
Salvadoran artist Beatriz Cortez is awarded a 2018 Emerging Artist Grant from the Rema Hort Mann Foundation. The Foundation provides support to emerging artists at a critical juncture in their careers, and more. Cortez's fellow awardees include Daniel T. Gaitor-Lomack, Haena Yoo, Janiva Ellis, Kang Seung Lee, Kelman Duran, Walker Tate, and Young Joon Kwak.

LUCY TOMASINO AND NATALIA DOMÍNGUEZ PARTICIPATE IN PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL IN LA TIGRA FOREST, HONDURAS
Réunion independent art space hosts "La Tigra" performance festival from February 23-25. Curated by Adan Vallecillo the festival features Honduran and international artists performing in the forest of La Tigra, a once-disputed mining enclave, which became the country’s first national park named after the female puma. 
The festival features Salvadoran artists Lucy Tomasino and Natalia Domínguez along with Scarlett Rovelaz (HN), Thomas Geiger (DE), Nahun Pérez (HN), Marcel Meury (CH), Leonardo Gonzalez (HN), Sandino Scheidegger (CH), Javier Calvo (CR), Paul Maheke (FR), Sergio Rojas Chaves (CR), Carlos Fernández (CR), Luca Müller (CH), Miguel Romero (HN), Andreas Wagner (CH) and Johanna Schaible (FR/CH).

MAUREEN PENDERS CURATES EXHIBITION AT EL RINCÓN SOCIAL FOR 2018 FOTOFEST BIENNIAL, HOUSTON, USA
Salvadoran artist and educator Maureen Penders curates El Chow: Fruto en vaina, a group exhibition of multidisciplinary and multimedia works by 20 Houston-based artists. These artists share an affinity for "Latinx cultural traditions and examine their hybrid mentalities as women and queer people of color." 

El Chow is on view at El Rincón Social, 3210 Preston Street in Houston, as part of the 2018 FotoFest Biennial, and runs from March 24- April 6, 2018, with a public opening reception on Saturday, March 24 from 7 PM-1 AM.

CRACK RODRÍGUEZ . MANIFESTO ESPACIO, GUATEMALA CITY, GUATEMALA

Salvadoran artist Crack Rodríguez's solo exhibition "El Espíritu del Reto" at Manifesto Espacio explores the artists performative practice -making actions and gestures using recognizable cultural symbols to create often ironic and rebellious parodies. "El Espíritu del Reto" opens on Thursday, February 22 from 6-8:30 PM at Manifesto Espacio, 5ta calle 5-18 Zona 1, Guatemala City. 
 

EL SALVADOR
NATALIA DOMÍNGUEZ, JOSE DAVID HERRERA, NADIE AND WALTERIO IRAHETA SHOW AT THE SPANISH CULTURAL CENTER 

Celebrating 20 years of cultural investment in San Salvador, the first exhibition at the Spanish Cultural Center for this significant year is titled "Ashes That Remain.” The exhibition features work by four Salvadoran artists, Natalia Domínguez, Jose David Herrera, Nadie and Walterio Iraheta, which reflect on notions of closing cycles.

The exhibition opened on February 10 as part of the city-wide Nuit Blanche Festival, and is on view through February at the CCE, San Salvador, Calle La Reforma 166, San Salvador.

ANTONIO ROMERO. MEXICAN EMBASSY, SAN SALVADOR

Salvadoran artist Antonio Romero creates “Nothing happened” at the Mexican Embassy in San Salvador. An exhibition combining video, sound and a manuscript, "Nothing happened" presents testimonies 
exploring dynamics of violence (including the naturalization of violence and fear), as well as power relations and the fight against territorial control. The exhibition is on view until March 10, 2018.

RECORD ATTENDANCE AT THE MUSEUM OF ART OF EL SALVADOR
Following the launch of  "Dialogues in Salvadoran Art" curated by Simón Vega and Rafael Alas Vásquez,  the Museum of Art of El Salvador (MARTE) enjoyed record attendance recording 3,931 visitors during Nuit Blanche on February 11. 
"Dialogues" is on view until December 2022.  Click here for more information.

Patricio Majano (1992) is a Salvadoran art professional, who graduated from the Art School at the University of El Salvador. His artwork focuses on the Salvadoran environment and society, and has been exhibited in El Salvador, USA, Guatemala and Spain.  Currently he participates in the Forma Museum program for violence prevention.
