AGBC Munich - February 2018 Reminders

February 2018 Upcoming AGBC Munich Event:  Wednesday, 28 February - AGBC Monthly Meeting, Marriott Hotel, Berlinerstr. 93, München. Sebastian Moss addressing “How to Negotiate with Difficult People.”

Opening Words from the President

Hi,

As usual, there is additional information on most of the following events in the sections after the Snapshot on upcoming events.

Expat Insider Survey – This InterNations initiative is now open for entry.  If you are an expatriate, please take 15 minutes to provide your inputs on this survey.  It is open until at least Sunday, 4 March.  Please see the link in the Expatriates Corner below.

Upcoming AGBC Meetings – Our 28 February monthly meeting features Sebastian Moss addressing “How to Negotiate with Difficult People.”  Then on 28 March we will feature a panel of experts debating Cyber Security in an interesting theoretical “hot air balloon” milieu.

Our 12th AGBC Exchange I will be held on Saturday, 21 April at AGBC Corporate member New European College’s campus in southern Munich.  We will feature 9 speakers with the 45-minute presentation sessions running from 1000-1300.  Mark Swiecicki, our VP Exchange, already has several speaker/topic proposals and is now seeking additional suggestions.  Interested in serving as a speaker?  If so, please contact Mark with your topic proposals at mark.swiecicki@yahoo.com.

With the Exchange on Saturday, 21 April, we will not hold an April monthly meeting, but return on 30 May with a discussion on cryptocurrencies, a very hot contemporary topic.  For the June meeting we will discuss the upcoming effect of autonomous vehicles, and for autumn, we will have an update on IBMN Watson plus our annual AGBC Goes to Oktoberfest on Sunday, 30 September.

For theater buffs, some of our AGBC members, friends and colleagues will be attending a special 12 March showing at the Cinema (Nymphenburger Str. 31) of Tennessee Williams’ classic “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”  This was filmed at the National Theatre in London during 2017.  The showing starts at 1900 and runs until 2205.

IBCM Meeting - One of our affiliates, the International Business Council Munich, is holding its Kick-Off meeting on Tuesday, 13 March at the Marriott.  This event is open to all members of the 16 participating groups, but space is limited so please sign up soon in the events tool at www.agbc-munich.com.  The program includes a keynote speech by Dr. Wolfgang Hübschle, head of Invest in Bavaria, short group presentations by each participating organization, a buffet dinner and networking opportunities.  It is an opportunity to meet members of the other groups.

BTW - the IBCM is growing.  During February the Deutsch-Niederländisches Geschäftsforum e.V. (DNG) and the German Malaysian Round Table (GMRT) joined.  With 16 international business organizations active in the Munich area, the IBCM provides an organizational interface, supports the sharing of ideas, facilitates making new business contacts, and stimulates learning.

MING Meetings - There are a number of upcoming MING and Munich community events coming in the next months, as listed in the event “Snapshot” section below.  One of the top fun ones is the 8th Bavarian-American Friendship Evening on Thursday, 26 April in the Hippodrom tent at the Frühlingsfest.

Munich Community – There is a clearance sale of used English Books coming up on 10 and 11 March at the Haar Bücher-Flohmarkt being held at the Haar Bürgerhaus.

Did’ya know?  - Daylight Saving Time begins in the US on Sunday, 11 March, and in
Europe (Summer Time) on Sunday, 25 March. During those two weeks, time zone
differences between most of the US and Europe will be one hour less than
usual.  Remember - Daylight Saving Time, clocks are turned forward one hour

All the best,
Larry

Internations’ 2018 Expat Insider Survey is Ready to Roll!

What are the top expat destinations in 2018? How does Germany compare to the rest of the world? Expat network InterNations answers these questions and many more in their annual Expat Insider survey.

Take part in this year’s Expat Insider survey and make your opinion count!

Link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/expatinsider2018-e

By sharing your experiences of living in Germany, you can help us find the best (and worst) countries for expats in 2018. Filling in our online questionnaire only takes 15 minutes, and you can win one of ten fantastic prizes to suit your international lifestyle! Prizes include a GoPro, an iPad, a waterproof camera and several hotel vouchers.

Founded in Munich more than 10 years ago, InterNations is now the among the world’s largest networks for expats. Munich is one of 390 communities around the world in the InterNations network.  Since 2014, InterNations asks expats around the world to rate their respective country of residence on 40 different factors, from work-life balance to health care to the friendliness of the people. The result is an in-depth analysis of expat life across the globe, and a ranking of the best (and worst) destinations. This information has already appeared in media publications such as Bloomberg, Wirtschaftswoche, and Manager Magazin.  Check out the results from last year here: https://www.internations.org/expat-insider/

The Expat Insider 2018 survey opens around 15 February and runs for about 2.5 weeks – until around 4 March.   Are you an American expatriate?  Or an expatriate from another country?  If so and if you would like to have your say in one of the biggest expat surveys worldwide, please take the survey.

In case your contacts from other locations would like to announce the survey in their own newsletters, we suggest that they replace ‘Germany’ with their own country. But they should double-check first that it does actually rank in the survey (popular expat destinations like USA, UK, France do, of course, but some smaller countries may not).

AGBC Special Theater Night – Tennessee William’s “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” - 12 March 2018

Event:       Recorded at the National Theatre in London in 2017:  theater viewing of Tennessee Williams’ Masterpiece – “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”
Starring:    Sienna Miller, Jack O’Connell and Colin Meaney
When:       Monday, 12 March, 1900-2205.
Where:      Cinema Filmtheater, Nymphenburgerstr. 31, 80335 Munich
Cost:         EUR 18.00 on the main floor, EUR 36.00 in the balcony.  There is an additional cost of EUR 1.35 for ordering online.
Tickets:     Available online at the Showtimes (program) tab at
www.cinema-muenchen.com.  Scroll down to event, then click on the “Tickets” tab.

For our theater lovers, here’s a great idea from Judith Martin.  Why don’t we attend a viewing of Tennessee Williams' masterpiece, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”? This play premiered in New York City in 1955.  It is the classic story of a Mississippi family in crisis.

On a steamy night in Mississippi, a Southern family gathers at their cotton plantation to celebrate Big Daddy’s birthday.  The scorching heat is almost as oppressive as the lies they tell.  Brick and Maggie dance around the secrets and sexual tensions that threaten to destroy their marriage.  With the future of the family at stake, which version of the truth is real?  And which will win out?

AGBC Munich March Monthly Meeting - Wednesday, 28 March 2018

Up, Up and Away – A Theoretical “Hot Air Balloon” Event – Cyber Security Debate

Panelists:    Willem Bulthuis, Michael Ricks, Bettina Wawretscheck, Jamie Wilkie, Rainer Witzgall
Moderator:  Ralph Phillips
When:   Wednesday, 28 March 2017
Time:    Registration starts 1830; meeting starts at 1900, dinner buffet around 2050.
Where:  Marriott Hotel, Berlinerstrasse 93, 80805 Munich
Cost:      EUR 25.00 for members, EUR 35.00 for guests (incl. dinner buffet)
Sign-Up:  Events tab on the new AGBC Munich Community Platform at
www.agbc-munich.com

Come join us for an AGBC Munich first – our Hot-Air Balloon Cyber Security debate.

The scene:  Imagine 5-6 contestants riding in a hot air balloon, along with the moderator.  The balloon is losing altitude with no more ballast on board so we need to jettison people.

The topic:  Various points of view on cyber security.

The approach:  4 suspenseful rounds of debate with each contestant having 3 minutes to expound.  Who will make it with the balloon safely to the ground?  After each round, the audience votes on the contestants that they want to hear more from.  The participant with the fewest votes then “parachutes to the ground.” By the end of the 4th round, we have 2 “survivors” who land the balloon – the winner and the moderator.

The success ingredients:  Cyber security is a topic which allows contrarian opinions and supports good speakers. A successful speaker captures the audience's attention in the early rounds but does not use all of her or his ammunition too early - the winner needs four interesting pitches.

The moderator:  He explains the rules to the audience, watches the time, conducts the voting and generally runs the proceedings.

The contestants:  Each has a strong but varying position, taking a role representing known parties in the security space – e.g. commercialization vs consumer protection and technology vs state and corporate security.  The likely roles:

  • Technology Believer: “Invest to be saved,” “Technology can solve all problems, so you better invest in it.”
  • Consumer Protection Advocate: “Everything you say, can and will be used against you.”
  • State and National Security Guardian: “If we can´t tap everyone, how do we find the bad guys?”
  • Social Media Enthusiast: “The more followers the better, I have nothing to hide.”
  • Cyber Security Pragmatist: “Breaches happen, so you better be prepared to deal with them.”  .
  • Technology Libertarian/Defensive Hacker:   “Who decides what´s good and what´s bad? There are many shades of grey.”

The audience:  Votes to keep in the balloon the people they want to hear more from, not necessarily the ones whose roles they morally approve of.

Comments:
  1. This is a “first time” event - we are experimenting so please bear with us.  Take notes on what you liked and on what could be improved for the next time.
  2. The “Hot Air Balloonists” are playing roles and their statements do not necessarily represent their personal beliefs.
  3. The scene is forward looking.
  4. Limitation – other than voting on who parachutes from the balloon, there will unfortunately be little time for significant audience interaction.  Please save your questions for the buffet/networking session afterwards or leave them in the Feedback Box.
