A.1) LADA: DIY 15 Call for Proposals

    DIY 15 - Deadline Thursday 22nd March 2018

Professional development projects by artists for artists across the UK.

DIY is an opportunity for artists working in Live Art to conceive and run unusual training and professional development projects for other artists.

DIY understands that the development of a Live Art practice is as much about the exploration of ideas and experiences as training in skills and techniques, and past DIY projects have proved to be invaluable experiences for project leaders, participants and organisers alike. DIY supports exciting, innovative and idiosyncratic Live Art professional development projects that offer something new and are geared to the eclectic and often unusual needs of artists whose practices are grounded in challenging and unconventional approaches, forms and concepts.

DIY projects can take any form, can be based anywhere, and can be loosely or rigorously focused on a specific theme/content. We particularly encourage proposals from artists from culturally diverse backgrounds and disabled artists, and artists working in other underrepresented or politicised territories.

Each DIY project receives £1,500 to cover fees and all direct project costs including venue hire, travel, materials and hospitality. As a trial for 2018, an additional £100 ‘top-up fund’ is available to cover participant expenses if required.

The annual ‘DIY Picnic’, a final networking event for all participants, lead artists and DIY partners, will take place in London on 1 December 2018 following the completion of this year’s projects.

Each year we open our doors to northern artists from any performing or visual arts discipline, at any stage in their career. We offer up to two weeks of space and can support small bursaries through an allocated budget of up to £1500. All that we ask is a willingness from artists who participate to share knowledge, finding’s or experience gained from the residency.

CARP is about the process of creating work rather than the finished product and we pride ourselves in offering a supportive and relaxed environment in which ideas can be tried and tested.

    CARP aims to:
Offer a safe and supportive environment for artists to play, take risks and explore their process
Actively support artists to realise their artistic ideas
Further develop our reputation as a progressive, forward thinking venue that is passionate about artistic development and is a creative hub for developing work and engaging with new audiences.
Support artists from and working in the North of England

A.4) Nonsuch: Call Out for Artists

NonsuchSTART is a transformational three year programme led by Nonsuch and supported by Children & The Arts to engage 1,200 11-16-year-olds across Nottinghamshire with amazing contemporary performance, Arts Award and digital art practice.

Each year, Nonsuch works with 400 pupils from four schools (100 per school) across Nottinghamshire. Across three terms, students will visit Nonsuch and our partner venues twice (Autumn & Spring Terms) for a day of performance and workshops before Nonsuch’s team of practitioners visits each school (Summer Term) for an intensive programme of Arts Award and digital production workshops.

For the 2018/19 iteration of Nonsuch//START we looking to work with two more performance makers or theatre companies to present new and exciting contemporary or physical theatre performance that is inspirational and relevant to 11-16-year-olds.

2018/19s theme is THE FUTURE. Overwhelmingly across all our research sessions and questionnaire responses, the 11-25s we spoke to across Nottingham are focussed on, stressed about, planning for and thinking about their future. They want good jobs, success and happiness.

We’re looking for two different performances by two different performance makers or theatre companies. Each performance will be presented four times, across four days either in October/November 2018 (Autumn Term) or February/March (Spring Term). Performances may not be on consecutive days due to school availability.

This is a funded opportunity and a fee will be paid for the performance days, however, due to the nature of our funds we’re not in a position to support new projects or offer full commissions. Therefore, we’re looking for performances that are already in development or have other funding secured and want to engage 11-16-year-olds with their work and practice.

We’re particularly interested in works by BME or disabled artists and we’re able to facilitate this application process to suit individual needs or access requirements. Please contact izzy@wearenonsuch.com or call 0115 837 1950 for more information.

    Uncomfort Zone
    Workshop facilitated by Mehmet Sander

    Saturday 12th May | 1:00-7:00pm | £30

Sander leads participants through a series of exercises and choreographies that challenge us physically, mentally and intellectually. The resulting moves are choreographed by Sander into a final piece.

From 6:00pm there will be a short public showing (10 min max) and a lecture by Mehmet Sander (30 min).

Suitable for ages 18+, no previous dance experience necessary.

B.6) OPENLAB: Game of Utopia, Paper Games

The next OPENLAB sessions are a ‘White Canvas’ with Antonio de la Fe on Friday 23 February, followed by a ‘Faciliated OL’ the week after with Joe Stevens.

“Game of Utopia: Paper Games” presents three paper-based situations each lasting an hour. This session will explore the theme of game design and game performance for three hours on Friday 2 March, from 10am to 1pm. The participants and myself (as facilitator) will become collaborative game designers and competitive game players within the materials and suggestions that are my three starting points for development: Paper Planes, Wine Skittles and Wine Maker, all taking place on a large grid representing the field of play.

OPENLAB sessions are open to all performers and anyone interested in presence and awareness in performance.

The sessions function on a pay-what-you-can basis. We suggest a £7 contribution for the ‘Facilitated OL’ sessions.

    B.7) ZU-UK: Adaptation, Re-make, Risk-taking

Adaptation, Participation, Risk-taking aims to take a fresh look at the reinterpretation of pre-existing sources in contemporary performance, and situates radical intervention as an innovative and risk-taking form of adaptation for the stage.

This event will stage a WORKSHOP by ZU-UK as a provocation, which will be followed by an afternoon PANEL DISCUSSION as a response to address relational and visual dramaturgies as alternative and equally valid ‘text’. We will examine processes of moving away from script-driven dramatic theatre by working with audiences in relational environments.

Professor Mark O'Thomas (University of Greenwich)
Theatre criticism and dramaturgy, Dr Duska Radosavljevic (Central Shool of Speech and Drama)

B.8) Wild Learning: Alterlives with Helen Stratford

Led by architect and artist Helen Stratford, this workshop will use theoretical and practical strategies to explore boundaries between human and non-human inhabitation, starting from a series of feminist texts to explore the impact of ‘human’ inhabitation on ‘nature’ and visa versa.

Working outside, we will make a mapping of these inbetween spaces, uncovering the ways that wildlife is managed but also how it continually alters and threatens the integrity of our human-made world.

Part survey, part inhabitation, part conversation. The workshop will provide a means to think about and discuss the challenges to architecture and human habitation that these post occupancy inhabitations provoke.

This workshop is the first of our Fermynwoods Contemporary Art's Outdoor Institute of Art: Wild Learning workshops - training sessions and professional development opportunities for artists working outdoors.
