Behavior Tip of the Month
Focus Your Attention on What You Want to See
(Replacement Behavior)
Children will repeat behaviors for which they receive reinforcement. When parents or teachers focus on modeling and teaching a replacement behavior (for example, standing with feet on the floor) INSTEAD of mentioning the inappropriate behavior (for example, stop kicking!), they prevent the inappropriate behavior from being reinforced, and therefore, repeated.

Audio Described Performance at DePaul Children’s Theater
For blind and visually impaired students, DePaul Children’s Theater, with Blind Service Association, offers FREE tickets for three performances this year. All plays have live audio description.

Blind Service Association College Scholarships
It is never too early to plan your application for a Blind Service Association’s Scholarship Program. Last year’s students received scholarships as high as $4,000. Applications for all qualified blind and visually impaired college students will be available January 1, 2018. Students must be enrolled or planning to be enrolled in graduate school, undergraduate, community college, or trade school in Fall 2018. In addition to a completed application, students will need two letters of recommendation, official transcripts, personal statement, eye report, and state ID. The deadline is April 1, 2018.

The National Federation of the Blind of Illinois is currently accepting applications for a free transitions club, Freedom Link. The club, which is free to members thanks to the Ellick and Charlotte Lindon charitable fund, meets once a month. Students are paired with low-vision and blind mentors and participate in activities that build confidence and improve mobility skills.
The National Federation of the Blind endorses the KNFB reader app. This app allows iOS, Android, and Windows 10 devices to read text aloud or to publish text in Braille. Learn more by clicking here.

Gallaudet Summer Youth Camps are designed for deaf and hard of hearing middle and high school students up to the age of 19. Programs provide stimulating summer learning and experiential opportunities that blend excitement, education, and enjoyment in a bilingual environment rich in cultural diversity and located just minutes away from the U.S. Capitol.
The last day to register is Tuesday, May 31st, 2018.
Drawing on his own experience on the autism spectrum and his knowledge of linguistics, Paul Jordan provides simple "scripts for thinking" that will help teens with autism to make sense of social situations and engage in everyday conversations.

The catalog can be accessed via the Library Page of the ISRC website. Free LibraryWorld apps are also available for iPhone, iPad, and Android users. After installing the apps, set the Library Name to ISTAC. No password is needed.
