*Did you miss my usual 150-word intro? I honestly had nothing more to write and decided not to force it. But in case you’re craving some visual inspiration, meet a duo whose 21-year partnership is inspiring me in ways more than gold medals and national pride.

FEEL GOOD

One of my favorite online publications recently reminded me that there are NO rules in fashion. As a fashion stylist, I've learned first hand that "cool" is invoked through confidence and following trends makes nearly no one feel like themselves. How I like to choose my clothes:

  • Touch. The materials I prefer to wear are closely linked to how they hug, drape and move on my body. I generally prefer tops in cashmere, silk, linen and cotton. For bottoms, I prefer textiles with more structure like wool, denim or leather. I feel at ease in these fabrics, a fact that's unique to me and something no trend forecaster would have the power or intuition to know.

  • Sight. We all have an eye for beauty. Learning to trust my eye (and not the sales clerk or mannequin) is a process that only gets easier with time and practice.

  • Reflection. Over time, I've trained myself to use my reflection as a cue to ask myself how I feel in what I'm wearing instead of the typical fitting room refrain. It's a conscious practice. It's not a vanity thing; in fact, it's kind of the opposite. The typical question--"How do I look?"--strips me of the power to choose for myself. An unexpected bonus? Tuning in to how I feel in clothing has positively impacted the way I show up in other areas of my life too. I'm more confident, joyful, and at ease.

  • FUN. Yes, even in all this conscious choosing, I'm still finding the fun in fashion. And for me, it's in the details: a swirl of color in a neckerchief, the way a seam runs along tailored trousers, the depth of a pocket to the perfect semi-satin shine on a belt buckle.

Want to learn how to curate your closet consciously? Let's do it together!
