Environment Agency Strategic Monitoring Review

The Environment Agency are undertaking a review of monitoring activities to transform how they will commission, plan and deliver monitoring (the Strategic Monitoring Review or SMR).

The aim is to derive even greater value from investment in information collection and use, with a greater emphasis on catchment data needs, partnerships and engagement.

The review will result in a number of changes in how EA manage this work including how they work with stakeholders and share data to achieve joint environmental aims.

To test this new approach, local EA teams have worked with stakeholders to establish 5 prototype catchments across England in the Derwent, Welland, Arun, Tamar and Axe river catchments.  Initial feedback has been positive with a number of opportunities identified to develop closer partnership working in the future, ensuring the creation and use a pool of environmental data to manage catchments. The EA are still keen to hear feedback on their proposals.

How to conserve wildlife on working farms in Britain

WildlifeCRU have created an illustrated handbook to highlight, in an accessible, concise and colourful way, some of WildCRU’s findings, while at the same time synthesising the most up-to-date knowledge of wildlife and habitat conservation on farmland.

WildCRU's purpose was to work with farmers, not against them, to foster the sort of countryside that society values. They began their journey by seeking farmers’ opinions and ideas for how better to integrate wildlife on farmland and to learn about their problems with wildlife.

The handbook is split into nine chapters on habitats and nine on wildlife groups. Each chapter briefly summarises information on each habitat/wildlife group, making key points leading to a management summary and sources of more information.

The handbook was revised in 2017 to include lists of relevant Countryside Stewardship options for each habitat/wildlife group. Each chapter has two feature boxes giving WildCRU research highlights.

Event: Take part in a Great British Spring Clean - this weekend!

The Rivers Trust have joined Keep Britain Tidy in assembling an army of #litterheroes for a UK wide mass clean-up. 80% of plastic in the oceans comes from land, and rivers are a significant pathway for it to get there.

Taking place between 2nd to 4th March 2018, Rivers Trusts up and down the country will be holding volunteer events to help clean up not only our villages, towns and cities but also our rivers and beaches.

Take a look at the full list of cleanups taking place across the UK here or just Rivers Trust cleanups here

Event: Invitation to register and participate in the Environment Agency and the Water Hub River Basin Planning mini-hackathon.

The Challenge
The Environment Agency want to improve the environment and, in partnership with The Water Hub and the Digital Catapult NETV, are seeking creative and revolutionary ideas for how environmental information can be better shared and communicated to deliver local action.

Why now?
In partnership with local communities and stakeholders, the Environment Agency are currently reviewing and updating their River Basin Management Plans, which set out how rivers will be protected and improved. The Environment Agency provides data and evidence to inform these plans and has identified a need to:
  • Engage and empower more people to contribute to River Basin Management Planning - making it meaningful for local people
  • Get more value from Environment Agency data by linking it with other open data sources
  • Build from existing Environment Agency resources and platforms

The event
The purpose of the event is to bring together end-users, technical experts and potential solutions providers to explore the challenge and rapidly develop ideas that could help to transform how environmental information could be better shared and communicated to deliver local action.

The event is FREE to attend and will take place at Sunderland Software City (SR1 1PG) over 2 days from Wednesday 14th March 2018 from 09:00 – Thursday 15th March 2018 closing at 12:00 GMT

To register for the event and for further details and agenda please follow the link below (Numbers are limited so please only identify no more than 1 or 2 suitable people to attend from your organisation).
