Out with the old, in with the new!
Yesterday was an exciting moment at the farm.  We planted the first seeds for the coming season.  We start the first seeds in our basement under lights and will move them out into a heated greenhouse space in a couple weeks.  We planted onions, shallots, leeks, & scallions.
Now, I have to tell you something that I learned recently.  During the 2017 season we had a strange thing happen to about 1/4 of all of our onion crop.  They divided and look like the largest shallots you have ever seen, but still taste like a mild sweet onion.  Jeff and I were bummed because we thought we did something wrong.  We asked many other farmers and most just scratched their heads.  We didn't feel like we could sell or distribute these onions because of their funky shape, but we've been hanging onto them in storage and giving them to friends and family.
When I placed the order for this year's seeds I decided to ask the seed company if they had any other reports of something that was off with that particular seed lot.  Guess what! They did. It turns out it wasn't our fault after all.  So now that we have let go of our guilt about being a bad farmers we've decided to offer them to you for free if you come see us at the Urban Ecology Center Open House on March 10th at Riverside Park.

Reserve your 3# bag now while supplies last.
