From the Desk of David Smith - College Senior Deputy Head

Central to student affairs at St David’s is our respect and honesty code which aims at ensuring that the boys who attended this institution do not let themselves, their families or their fellow pupils down. I urge all parents to spend a few minutes with their sons and together read the respect and honesty code. These are the fundamentals of an upstanding individual and are at the core of what student affairs at St David’s Marist Inanda stands for.
STUDENT AFFAIRS RESPECT AND HONESTY CODE
In the pursuit of the ideals of St David’s Marist, every boy who attends the College:

  • must acknowledge and appreciate the necessity of a common foundation among all boys who attend Inanda.
  • understands that our common foundation is a commitment to our Marist Values and a commitment to honesty and respect.
  • values the need for the highest standards of personal integrity, intellectual honour and respect for others.
  • understands that perpetuating and maintaining these ideals are the shared responsibility of all boys who attend Marist Inanda.
  • endorses the Inanda Code of Conduct with the aim of accomplishing the core values of the Institution, in full belief that its implementation and promotion will be of the greatest benefit to all boys who are enrolled at Marist Inanda.

BOARDING @ ST DAVID'S
Boarding has returned to St David’s for the first time in 46 years with the first 24 boarders proudly entering the newly developed establishment on the 11 February 2018, to the envy of many other St David’s scholars. New projects, especially ambitious ones, always present challenges and this project was no different. The Marist values illustrated by various stakeholders throughout this process in overcoming these was a great example for our boarders. My sincere thanks to all staff for their contributions to all facets in making the past two weeks so enjoyable for the boarders.
The Boarders have laid strong foundations to lifelong friendships as the camaraderie across grades becomes evident. The boys have started developing some good traditions with the seniors dragging the juniors with them for early morning practices, taking turns saying grace, assisting each other with completing and understanding homework and the failed attempts at the “night swim”. The highlight of the week was the singing of “I heard a rumour” and chocolate cake (thanks to Mr and Mrs Black) to celebrate the birthday of Mogale Baas aka “Tiger”.
As boarding integrates itself into the complex environment of this exemplary school and the excitement settles, the anticipation of the second phase begins. I encourage all interested parties to contact me at sutherlands@stdavids.co.za regarding information about boarding.

REFLECTION

The First Station: Jesus is condemned to death.
Pilate spoke to them again, “Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?’ They shouted back, ‘Crucify him!’ Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified” Mark 15:12-13,15.

Jesus had just celebrated Passover with his closest friends.  In the warm intimacy of their shared meal, Jesus had washed their feet, fed them with the bread of life, and loved them with mercy and tenderness.  But their joy turned to bitter disappointment when he was betrayed, arrested, and condemned.  How could Judas have led the soldiers to Jesus? How could Judas have had no mercy on Jesus, his beloved friend?
We too betray Jesus when we put ourselves first, allowing others to fend for themselves.  We abandon him when we ignore the poor, choosing instead to feed, clothe and house ourselves first while the poor sit at our gates suffering.  We condemn others like Judas did Jesus when we follow the pathway of selfishness and sin rather than self-giving love.
Let us pray: Jesus, like your disciples, we are weak in faith.  May your grace empower us to be like you in our daily lives. May we empty ourselves of selfishness so that we may be filled with mercy for others especially those who suffer most. Move our hearts, we pray, to engage in the works of mercy that can heal the world. Amen.
