NCAA Prez Emmert joined Inside College Basketball on CBS yesterday morning. Key takeaways: "No one wants to hear words, they want to see action, and I get that as much as anyone. We’re serious about that, and I, along with the board of directors, are focused on really making a systemic change starting this Spring and going forward through this summer. […] By the time we get to Selection Sunday, we’ll have a much better handle on what’s going on with the current students so we have eligibility solutions in place for those who are and aren’t eligible. Everyone in the selection committee and the fans out there will really know what’s going on. […] The vast majority of coaches, and I believe this deeply, are behaving themselves and conducting themselves appropriately, as are the vast majority of student-athletes. We need to recognize them for what they’re doing and their commitment and enjoy these great games. [...] After the season is over, we’re going to go in and make changes to the nature of the rules and move forward. Especially the adults, we’re going to hold them accountable for their behavior." + The brightest spotlight is on Arizona as HC Miller sat out of last night's game at Oregon, though he says he'll be vindicated on reports of offering $100K for standout freshman student-athlete Ayton. Miller's contract in Tuscon could entitle him to more money if he's fired "with cause" than "without cause," which, of course, seems totally backwards. Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann reviews the contract, "To be clear, there is no current dispute over Miller’s contract. But if Miller is fired without cause, a counter-intuitive contract dispute might surface: Miller arguing that he engaged in unethical conduct and thus should have been fired for cause. It would make quite the lawsuit." (link)
+ Arizona's Board of Regents held an emergency meeting yesterday. Of note, "This is an emotionally charged issues, but it is essential that we move forward decisively and based on facts. We must do everything we can to ensure that our programs are of the highest caliber as we much also protect the rights of all involved and respect due process for employees." (link)

+ Michigan State's Bridges will also take the floor despite seeing his name on ASM records. Interim MSU AD Beekman: "After learning of the allegations in yesterday’s Yahoo! Sports article, our compliance office conducted a thorough internal review. Michigan State presented its findings to the NCAA, and Miles Bridges has been cleared for competition moving forward, beginning Sunday at Wisconsin." (link)

New Northern Arizona AD Marlow is getting up to speed in Flagstaff & one immediate challenge is navigating a new $150 athletics fee that has some students up in arms. In total, the new fee could be worth $3.1M to the Lumberjacks & Marlow points to similar funding structures across the Big Sky, "There's two things we are trying to communicate. One, we have basketball teams practicing on a floor with garbage buckets on them catching raindrops. That’s a problem. And then we are also trying to be creative finding opportunities for the general student body." Those in opposition say they were promised tuition wouldn't increase during their four years & fees are an unethical way around the situation. Marlow also indicates more women's scholarships are needed to balance Title IX considerations, non-committal on if a sport might be added. More. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz continue his bonus ledger as yesterday Florida State AD Wilcox earned an extra $10K stack with ACC championships by both Men's & Women's Indoor Track squads. Kansas MBB HC Self to get $50K for yet another Big 12 regular season crown. $16.5K for Toledo MBB HC Kowalczyk as the Rockets secured at least a share of the MAC West regular season title. $50K for Utah's Krystkowiak for at least a 10-6 Pac-12 mark, $15K for Louisiana's Marlin & $5K for South Dakota State's Otzelberger for Sun Belt & Summit regular season triumphs, respectively. The Warriors now have more than 12 staffers dedicated solely to digital strategy & motivated partners to get more creative with content as part of sponsorship deals. How about this: "The Warriors’ fresh look at their digital strategy included a deep dive, with the help of Wasserman, on the characteristics of its social media followers. The study found that 40% of the team’s 11 million Facebook fans were located in the Philippines. Armed with their social media data in the country, the team targeted Filipino brands for sponsorship deals. The Warriors reached a multi-year deal with Tanduay Rum worth more than $1 million annually." (link)

Times Free Press reporter Wiedmer pens on Tennessee AD Fulmer in his new role with the Vols. Fulmer on the job: "It will gobble up all of your time if you let it. But it's never boring. Every 30 minutes it's something else. I'm enjoying it, though. I really enjoy being around young people every day. They keep you energized." On how he handles head coaches: "You support all of them until you can't. Now I'd like all of them to win every game they coach. I would certainly like to see us one day win the (Learfield Directors' Cup) All-Sports Trophy. But I was talking to (Wisconsin AD and former Badgers football coach) Barry Alvarez one day about this and he said, 'A coach is a whole lot better equipped to evaluate another coach than someone who's never been a coach.' So I like to think that I'll make the the best decision for the program when those situations arise." On the ongoing FBI scandal: "Sports is part of the rest of the world. There are always going to be people who don't want to follow the rules. That doesn't make all of them bad people. Many of them are folks who've made one bad mistake. But compliance is at the top of the list of what should be expected of you in college athletics. We had very few compliance issues when I was a coach, and our culture at the University of Tennessee will always be to be compliant with NCAA rules. That will never change." More. (link)
Terrific press for Missouri Valley MBB regular-season champ Loyola (Chicago) as the Chicago Tribune's Greenstein tagged along with the Ramblers for a road trip. AD Watson on MBB HC Moser: "What’s nice is he loves it here, his family loves it here and we love having him here. He has the perfect background — grew up in Chicago, Catholic high school (Benet), played in the Valley (Creighton), Jesuit school. What makes him even more special is his enthusiasm — nobody has to tell him, 'Hey, go thank the band; thank the cheerleaders.' He does that, and it’s 100 percent sincere. We’ll do everything we can to figure out a way to make sure he is here for a long time. We joke about it a little bit." Moser: "I’m not even thinking about the next step. Honest to God, I have put my whole life, sweat and tears into this (job), and it has not been easy. It’s fun to see from where we came to where we are. Toledo MBB got the same treatment from The Blade for the team's road trip to Ball State last week, which was undoubtedly a more pleasant experience going than coming, as the Rockets fell 99-71 in Muncie. FSUNews.com profiles female leaders in the Noles athletic department, including Sr. Assoc. AD Fuchs, who is described as the "heart to the leadership," and HCs Alameda (Softball), Bond (Golf), Hyde (Tennis) and Semrau (WBB). Semrau has her student-athletes spend time with the community and cultivate relationships with children who will see the young women as role models: "If you’re talking about being the person first then you’ve got to put people in a position where they can grow individually and as people." Fuchs, who played for Semrau: "It’s neat how sports help to bring the world together. It helps to bring, gender race religion, beliefs. Some comments by former President Obama during his session at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference on Friday have leaked. From one attendee, "Awesome experience witnessing Barack Obama talking sports at Sloan today. In 10 minutes he detailed exactly what has to happen to fix these NCAA problems. NBA and NFL need minor league systems to draft high schoolers into. The guys who are good enough should get paid right away." Also reportedly from Obama, "Getting diversity around you isn’t hard if you are intentional about it.
