Dear <<First Name>>,

Our “Reaching Out With English" Training Workshop went really well on Saturday, February 10th at Encompass Partnerships!  People from 18 churches around Calgary learned about lesson planning, running a conversation class, grammar, employment, pronunciation, teaching methods, games and celebrations.  Our team really pulled together and we now have received interest from three churches that would like to host a training workshop.  Watch for more information and photos in next month's newsletter.

The Calgary Sun (http://calgarysun.com/news/local-news/calgarys-ethnic-diversity-deepens-with-immigrants-comprising-nearly-30-of-city) reported on October 29, 2017:
According to Statistics Canada census data released this week, the immigrant count in the Calgary metropolitan area grew from 197,175 in 2001 to 404,700 last year.  That’s increased the immigrant percentage of Calgary’s population from 20.9 to 29.4 per cent.  In 1959, one out of 350 Calgarians was a visible minority; today that number is one in three compared to a national average of one in five.  Leading the way in immigration from 2011 to 2016 are those hailing from the Philippines, followed by India, China, Pakistan, then Nigeria.

We have a lot of work to do in preparing the church to welcome and embrace new immigrants with the love and Good News of Jesus Christ while we teach English as a Second Language. Can you see the opportunities?

Openness starts between the ears

By Allan Pole

Marty was touring Europe just as they were breaking down the Berlin Wall.  Wanting to get some historic pieces of the Wall, he headed for Berlin.  Because he found the hotels there beyond his means, he asked a young policeman if he knew of an inexpensive place where he could stay.  The policeman told Marty he had a small apartment he wasn't using and he was welcome to use it.  When Marty offered him money the policeman declined, but explained, "When I come to Canada, I want to stay at your place."

Such openness is all too rare these days!  However, the words of the Apostle Peter still direct us in 1 Peter 4:9:  "Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling." NIV

The term "hospitality" used in the Bible means "love of the stranger or alien."  Hospitality is one of the primary means for us to demonstrate love to others.

When you first hear this you might think, "Oh, I better start having people over to my house."  That would be one end result of what Peter is driving at here, but it is much deeper than that.
