AN AREA YOUTH'S VISION TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR WILDLIFE

The experience of rescuing a snared American Coot got Lynnea Edgecomb Nelson thinking about how much fishing line she has seen laying around where animals or humans could become entangled. Monofilament line can cause serious injury to animals, even death. Lynnea and her mother, Rochelle, talked about it and did some research. Lynnea kept saying "somebody needs to do something about this problem." Well, she is that somebody! But she's young (11 years old) and cannot do it alone. Her family and friends are giving her encouragement and support. "Cast It In, Kansas Edition" is Lynnea's vision, and it has become her 4-H Wildlife Project. She is currently looking for financial support through her GoFundMe page, as well as volunteers to assist with installing and monitoring monofilament line recycling bins around Kansas lakes and reservoirs. Catch Lynnea's vision, and support her efforts and/or construct and install a recycling bin near your favorite 'fishin' hole' from readily available plans (remember to add a rubber bird/animal excluder over the opening).

PROJECT FEEDERWATCH
Wednesday, Feb. 28 and Thursday, Mar. 1 - 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Mar. 7 and Thursday, Mar. 8 - 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Mar. 21 and Thursday, Mar. 22 - 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Embrace the Winter and count feeder birds for science! Project FeederWatch is a winter-long survey of birds that visit feeders at backyards, nature centers, community areas, and other locales in North America. FeederWatchers periodically count the birds they see at feeders from November through early April and send their counts to Project FeederWatch. Data help scientists track broadscale movements of winter bird populations and long-term trends in bird distribution and abundance. Please feel welcome to join us at your convenience anytime during this twice-monthly, 2-day, feeder count at the Burroughs Audubon Nature Center and Bird Sanctuary in Fleming Park!

BIRD BANDING
Sunday, March 11 - Noon to 3:00 p.m.

LAST BANDING DATE OF THE SEASON. Our friends from the Missouri River Bird Observatory, Ethan and Dana, gently capture, band, and answer your questions about these wild birds. Visitors have the opportunity to photograph and release birds back into the wild! Please feel welcome to come and go at any time throughout the three-hour event. If you can't make it in January, this season's banding programs will be held on the second Saturday of each month, November through March.

Note: High winds, rain and extreme temperatures are hazardous to netted birds. In case of inclement weather, Ethan and Dana will present a non-banding program, including resighting previously banded birds. If the weather outlook is poor, please call 816-795-8177 to ask if bird banding is happening as scheduled.

February and March Field Trips

TO VARIOUS KANSAS AND MISSOURI LOCATIONS

Burroughs field trips are free to Audubon members and the public, and people of any age or level of experience are welcome to participate! Any trip may involve walking on a variety of terrain and surfaces, but some trips will be more strenuous than others. Trip leaders can advise you of the physical activity involved. Since we visit a number of wild areas and habitats, we respectfully ask that your pets not accompany us on the trail. If they're not given to vocal excitement, pets in vehicles are fine.
