Earlier this month Missouri AD Sterk sent an email to all of his Tiger student-athletes in connection to the developments at Michigan State, "It is my highest priority. that our environment be safe, and support excellence in every regard for each and every one of you." Sterk uses the acronym RIGHT for holding coaches & student-athletes accountable: Respect, Integrity, Gratitude, Humility & Together. Senior student Schafer, who directs the campus's 'It's On Us' effort, says the athletic department has become more committed under Sterk's watch, believes there's even more that can be done, "If the players were given more opportunities and more time to have dialogue with student leaders on campus, then we’d see even more productive discussions in athletics." N.C. State boss Yow talks through the challenges of leadership in the AD chair versus those of running a sport program as a head coach, a juxtaposition Yow would know plenty about. Yow starts by noting the macro vs. micro approach being a major difference between the two roles, also points to the importance of trust for the organization to operate at a high level. Of note from Yow, "The only thing you need to remember when you’re leading anyone, is to treat them like you would like to be treated...that’s just the start. [...] The number one place people look for accountability is with their leader. [...] As a leader, people know what I’m doing and that matters a lot more than what I’m saying." (link)
Former Arkansas AD Long visited with Put me in, Coach & updated on what's been on his schedule, as well as observations on developments around the industry. Long visited Missouri for a hoops contest & doesn't think the Tigers quite feel like a SEC institution yet, "but that takes time to develop." Continues to believe the College Football Playoff should stick at four entrants, notes the importance of 10 key correlated stats to previous CFP & BCS squads, points to the consideration of injuries as an underrated part of the process & says the group works hard to remove the "brand" of the teams when working through selections. (link)
USC WBB student-athlete Moore claims Oregon State fans directed racial slurs at her & her teammates after the Trojans dropped a close decision in Corvallis yesterday. Moore, via social media, "Oregon state thinks they have the best fans. ... no you have racist fans. Calling players “you black girls”, “black b****” and “you n******” is unacceptable. @Pac12Network @pac12 you need to address this @BeaverWBB." Beavers Deputy AD/SWA Vydra says an incident report is in progress, notes she's never faced this situation before with OSU supporters, but expects "our fans to be classy at all times." (link)
The Jamestown Sun's Kolpack takes a look at FCS attendance last season, notes the rise of Florida A&M, Prairie View A&M & North Carolina A&T as the exits of Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, Old Dominion & Charlotte haven't led to a loss of butts in seats across the division. North Dakota State AD Larsen also points to the quality of FB at the FCS level & the addition of key out-of-conference match-ups, like NDSU-Eastern Washington, NDSU-Delaware, Montana State-South Dakota State, South Dakota-Weber State & others that help to drive interest. #GBR (Go Big Red) is a popular choice for many Nebraska fans on social media, however it's also prominently used by supporters of Great Britain during international competition, like the current Winter Olympics. Huskers Asst. AD for Creative & Emerging Media Mosier: "It’s only a couple of weeks so we can figure out another way to use and expand our brand on Twitter during this time. We can go back to owning it after the Olympics end. It’s just one of those things that’s not that big of a deal. […] I would hope at some point in time we’re able to participate in an event where Twitter activates the ‘hashflag’ and we can activate the #GBR hashflag with some Nebraska flair behind it. Until that’s the case, we just roll with the punches." (link)

Oklahoma State mega-booster Pickens on his relationship with Pokes AD Holder, "Over time, my respect for him has only grown. And I don't think you can find someone more committed to Oklahoma State. Look what he's done with the golf program. Look how virtually all of the athletic programs there have been taken to new heights. People scoffed at the athletic village concept when he championed it years ago. Now, as it's moving ever closer to completion, we can only marvel at his success as a fundraiser." Further, Pickens says he won't be a contributor to a push for a new Baseball stadium, "When the story on the stadium is written, you will find out what a great fundraiser Mike Holder actually is." Advice for all OSU fans, "The school is bigger than all of us. Never forget that." A bit more. (link)
Another former AD, Penn State's Joyner, reflects on his time in Happy Valley & his current role as Executive Director of the notable Andrews Institute in Florida. Joyner on the decision to sever ties with highly-accomplished FB HC Paterno, "That was very difficult. I was part of 32 people on the board. We labored over that for three days. It was not without thought. You always have regret. We did what we did. I think it was well thought out." Overall, "I think it became an accelerated course in crisis management, and management in general." Joyner says he's proud of how he helped his alma mater, connects the dots with famed surgeon Andrews & their longtime desire to work together. Joyner on Andrews, "Doctor Andrews is a great surgeon, but he really knows how to take care of teams." (link)
ECU's $55M expansion & upgrade of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium is on-time & within budget per Pirates Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations McLamb. Completion is expected in 2019, but the progress won't inhibit the 2018 home slate. McLamb: "Construction will not impact our operations or game management, and we will be able to host our home games. There will be some work-arounds we’ll coordinate with our facilities and environmental health and safety team each week." "Some" loge boxes have been sold, as have half club level boxes & Founders-level boxes are still available. More details on the progress. (link)
A quartet of Rutgers HCs discuss the positive impact of the coming Rodkin Center for Academic Success & the term "game-changer" is used quite liberally. Men's Soccer skipper Donigan: "It just sends a message to everybody — every student-athlete that’s here, every coach, every support-staff member, everybody involved in Rutgers athletics — that it's a whole new ballgame." Women's LAX HC Brand Sias: "For so many of our sports, the opportunities beyond their college career, there’s not a lot of money-making opportunities, particularly in the sport of women’s lacrosse. So we want to make sure that we are providing for them the best opportunities to prepare for their lives after college." More. (link)
In an Instagram post that looks to have since been deleted, Texas Swim & Dive AC Collins indicated the Longhorns will build a new outdoor pool & diving dryland space. Locker rooms & other team needs are reportedly part of the project that stems from a 2016 master facilities plan. Collins said the project will get moving this summer. (link)
It's Personnel: Outgoing Ole Miss MBB HC Kennedy was planing to stick with the Rebels through the end of the year, but decides to step away immediately to limit the distractions around the program. (link); UNC Wilmington Women's Soccer HC Cairney has been on paid administrative leave since early December as a Title IX investigation continues. The development stems from an allegation of sexual misconduct involving Cairney back in 1997. Seahawks AD Bass declines comment. (link)

Total views, unique viewers, completion rates, time spent watching, audience demos & geographic hot zones are now part of the reporting data for Snapchat's most prolific accounts & personalities. Recode's Wagner: "The business of influencer marketing can be incredibly valuable — tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per video or campaign. If Snapchat users can tell a marketer more about who they’ll reach — 16- to 22-year-olds in the Midwest, for example — it could make those deals even more valuable. That’s good news for Snapchat, and not because it will get a piece of those deals. It won’t. But if influential internet stars are incentivized to use Snapchat, their internet followers will use Snapchat, too." (link)

Important for those of you going after the open AD chair at Buffalo: Students held a town-hall style meeting last week with 11 fee stewards from eight different departments as the school has plans for a five-year, 2.53% comprehensive student fee increase. Among the stewards were Senior Assoc. AD for Administration Wills, who discussed last year's athletic fee spending, which totaled $8.982M, and the proposed a 2% increase to cover inflationary costs and increases in minimum wage. The biggest share of the pot went toward student employment, grants-in-aid for women to help the school comply with Title IX, and operational costs for teams. March 7 is the deadline to send proposals to the SUNY system. (link)
UConn responded yesterday to the claims by WTIC radio that the partnership between the two will be ending due in part to political differences: "Contrary to a recent report, the political leanings of other WTIC programs or personalities played no role whatsoever in UConn’s decision to move its sports programming to iHeartMedia. The university and IMG sought a partner that could package more UConn athletic contests and sports-related programming and deliver that content to more fans across Connecticut and the world. iHeartMedia and its broadcast network is best suited to deliver on that objective, at a mutually agreed market value. That was the sole objective." UConn claims the 10-year, multi-million dollar deal with iHeart is a better financial package than what Entercom/WTIC offered. The CT Post's Jacobs doesn't think this is the end of the argument and predicts "this could turn ugly on some dangerous levels." (link)
Central Connecticut Men's Golf HC Gallo on last month's announcement that both Blue Devil golf programs would be eliminated: "The kids were taken off guard. They had no idea this was coming. ... I anticipate that we win conference. I don't think anything can bring these kids more together than this. ... They want to go out with a bang." The golf teams suffered a net loss of $354K last year and the school predicts the cuts will save approximately $2M. (link); Wright State plans to cut the Swimming & Diving programs after this season, but student-athletes argued their position to the Board of Trustees at last week's meeting, specifically asking for proof that the team is unprofitable. The team will sit down with the VP of Business and Ops today.  (link)
The University of Richmond wants to finish with the highest average home attendance for MBB games at the Robins Center since 1992-93, when the Spiders averaged 7,214. Renovations to the venue in 2013 reduced capacity to 7,201 and through 13 home games UR is averaging 6,505, which would be the top attendance mark in 25 years if the season ended today. Asst. AD for Marketing/Fan Development Warner says the biggest challenge is small enrollment numbers and thus a small alumni base from which to draw fans. (link); Here is a breakdown of average attendance across the Dartmouth sports portfolio, where Football and Men's Hockey own a considerable lead over the other 11 ticketed sports. The Big Green Rewards app is one of the initiatives employed by Asst. AD for Marketing Sgrecci to increase attendance at sporting events across the board. The article includes a somewhat deeper look at other ways Sgrecci and her team are working to get butts in seats, including pulling from individual sports' budgets to charter buses to home events that are not on campus. Also Noticed: Finalists for the open prez post at The Citadel could be announced by April as the interview process has begun. (link); Many Holy Cross students and faculty don't agree with the school's decision to remain the Crusaders. HC's statement: "We understand that the decision is disappointing to some. However, our community should know that all perspectives were represented and thoroughly discussed when the Board (of Trustees) met last weekend." (link); Southern Miss has sold more than 1,700 Baseball season tickets, surpassing the previous record of 1,482, set during the 2013 season. (link); Looks like NFL SVP Ravitz is heading back to the tech/media world after two seasons with the league. (link)
Global CEO coach and author Nawaz advises for Harvard Business Review "How To Be Friends With Someone Who Works For You." 1. Choose your friends carefully; 2. Set expectations at the start; 3. Be clear about your roles in conversation; 4. Be transparent with others; and, 5. Do your job. "Friendships are based on mutual trust and transparency. Navigating manager-employee friendships is tricky, especially when, as a boss, you’re privy to information that your employee is not. The work friendships that survive are also based on trust and transparency: transparency about the boundaries within which you will be able to communicate and trust that your actions are professional, not personal." (link)
