Thanks to the more than 500 readers who filled out last week's survey about the Dispatch! I'll go through all of your feedback before I make any changes to the newsletter.

As I'm still dealing with some personal issues that take up a lot of my time at the moment, I'm looking for a bit of help from a graphic designer with experience in lettering and typesetting to create the surprise add-on of the next issue. To be honest, I don't have much of a budget for this, but I can pay with a free subscription and extra copies of the insert you'd help design. If you're interested just reply to this email with a link to your site/portfolio. Please note that I probably won't be able to reply to every email due to time constraints! I still appreciate your offer to help, of course!

I'm again very grateful to have another guest-editor help out with this issue of the Dispatch. Luke has compiled a wonderful list of recommendations for you.

Have a great week! – Kai

Apps

Breaker

Discover new podcasts through friends

A guy I used to work with at SoundCloud is behind this great podcast app. Unlike similar apps, it has a social element built in, so you can see which podcasts are most popular, and which ones your friends have listened to and 'liked’. It’s a great way to find new things to listen to.

Moment

Track your phone use, change your habits

Like seemingly everyone else, I’m trying to spend less time on my phone. Moment shows you data on your phone usage each day – how many minutes you spend on each app, for instance – which usually makes me feel incredibly depressed, and vow never to open Instagram again.

Happy Plant

A fun way to remember to water your plants

I didn't think I needed an app to remind me to water my plants either. But this app is super fun, super cute, and prompts you to take ‘plant selfies’ after each watering so you can track the growth of your little green friends. 🌿

Bobby

Keep track of your subscriptions

It’s hard to keep track of all my subscriptions – various magazines, Spotify, Netflix, website domains, apps, etc. Bobby is here to help: a beautiful iOS app for tracking your recurring payments and fixed costs each month. It’s really useful, but also a little sad to see how those subscriptions add up.

Gear

Bramley Screen Riser

A place for your screen and accessories

This screen riser elevates my screen from the desk, holds my pens and a cup of tea, and has a little space underneath to hide my computer away. Better still, it’s super cheap, well built, and really pretty.

Sugru

Mouldable glue

If you mixed playdough with superglue, you’d end up with Sugru. (Don’t actually try this.) It’s a genius substance that you can use to fix almost everything – cables, mugs, cameras. I made a nifty dinosaur door handle with it.

Ailun

Mini USB-C adapters

I was about to spend a small fortune on a whizzy USB-C multi adaptor to plug things into my new MacBook Pro. Then I found these super cheap connectors on Amazon. The build quality is solid and they’re cheap enough to leave in different places so that you’re never without an adapter.

If It’s Important, Learn It Repeatedly

Like the author of this piece, I read Cal Newport’s ‘Deep Work’ and declared it one of my favourite books of the year. Then I forgot everything on its pages and never read it again. This piece demonstrates the importance of reading things repeatedly.

From inboxing to thought showers: how business bullshit took over

The tech world is full of nonsense and jargon. But it’s not just tech. This piece looks at the rise of ‘business bullshit’. It's insightful as well as hilarious.

Pencil vs Computer

Austin Kleon is one of my favourite people writing about creativity, tech and the arts. In this podcast episode of Hurry Slowly, he explains how he moves between the analogue and tech worlds in his work, and goes into some incredible detail on pencils and notebooks.
