It's important for everyone to be prepared for possible emergencies. Such preparedness can be especially challenging for people with disabilities. The American Congress of Rehabilitation has composed a checklist to help individuals with disabilities.

Behavior Tip of the Month

Silent Dinner / "I'm Describing" Dinner

Deaf/HH – Hold a Silent Dinner in which all participants at the table stop talking completely when the last person sits down to eat. For the entire meal all participants use sign language to communicate. If a person doesn’t know a word (i.e., sign) then they will fingerspell the word to others until someone shows them the sign. If no one knows the sign, they will look it up on the internet (e.g., ASLPRO.COM). The first few meals the family might practice the alphabet.

Blind/Low Vision – Hold an “I’m Describing” Dinner in order to enhance skills in Audio Description. Each person takes a turn describing a place or situation. Practice identifying specific details, such as narrating actions taken by individuals and facial expressions.

On March 10, 2018, IMPACT CIL Deaf Services will host their Bingo Night as part of their mission to build partnerships to provide affordable hearing aids and services. Click the images below for more details about participating in this event.

Blind Service Association College Scholarships
It is never too early to plan your application for a Blind Service Association’s Scholarship Program. Last year’s students received scholarships as high as $4,000. Applications for all qualified blind and visually impaired college students will be available January 1, 2018. Students must be enrolled or planning to be enrolled in graduate school, undergraduate, community college, or trade school in Fall 2018. In addition to a completed application, students will need two letters of recommendation, official transcripts, personal statement, eye report, and state ID. The deadline is April 1, 2018.

Audio Described Performance at DePaul Children’s Theater

For blind and visually impaired students, DePaul Children’s Theater, with Blind Service Association, offers FREE tickets for three performances this year. All plays have live audio description.

The National Federation of the Blind endorses the KNFB reader app. This app allows iOS, Android, and Windows 10 devices to read text aloud or to publish text in Braille.

The National Federation of the Blind of Illinois is currently accepting applications for a free transitions club, Freedom Link. The club, which is free to members thanks to the Ellick and Charlotte Lindon charitable fund, meets once a month. Students are paired with low-vision and blind mentors and participate in activities that build confidence and improve mobility skills.

New to the ISRC Library

Written by someone who has walked the path of deteriorating eyesight and worked as a qualified crisis counselor, this handbook contains a wealth of insight into the physical, emotional and psychological challenges facing those with a disability.

To request this book or any other library resources, contact librarian@isrc.us.

The ISRC library consists of an expanding collection of over 1,200 items, including books, DVDs, CDs, test kits, toys, and games related to deafness, deaf culture, sign language, blindness, mental health, behavior management, parenting, and administration. The catalog can be accessed via the Library Page of the ISRC website. Free LibraryWorld apps are also available for iPhone, iPad, and Android users. After installing the apps, set the Library Name to ISTAC. No password is needed.

ISRC library materials may be requested by contacting librarian@isrc.us or by calling 847-559-8195. We also accept requests by fax at 847-559-8199. All our resources are free and will be mailed to you with return postage included.
