Tools for Assessing and Managing
Community Trees and Forests
Learn about i-Tree Tools
In this issue:
As a demonstration of the dramatic change that can impact urban forests, the two images above are of the same location in South Bend. In 2005 it was a hospital campus with a lot of impermeable surface, and currently it is a high school with more trees and turf.
In 2017, the city of South Bend, Indiana was one of ten cities chosen by the National League of Cities (NLC) for the Leadership in Community Resilience Program. Through their Sustainable Cities Institute, the NLC offers these communities a small funding grant, technical assistance, and support for development opportunities aimed at helping build resiliency through efforts to reduce risk, improve services, adapt to changing conditions, and empower citizens.

South Bend utilized this program to assess the extent to which urban forest and other green infrastructure can be developed to help manage stormwater, mitigate urban heat, and improve neighborhood quality. In November, members of the Davey Institute were invited to their workshop with city sustainability managers, parks and urban foresters, and the public works department, for a discussion on how improvements in the amount and quality of their canopy cover can help achieve these goals.

Project Learning Tree
Project Learning Tree and their partners have collaborated to create lesson plans and resources for K-12 teachers around i-Tree Design. These resources should be available by the end of February.
Additional Pollution Removal Quantification in i-Tree Eco
In an upcoming release of i-Tree Eco, users will be able to find out how much pollution is removed each month by grasslands, which includes maintained, unmaintained, and herbaceous cover, and the health impacts attributed to that. This new feature will be limited to Ecov6 projects in the U.S. using sample plots and collecting ground cover data.

i-Tree Eco International
Coming this spring, i-Tree Eco will be fully automated for out of the box use in Mexico and over 30 additional countries in Europe. This will increase the reach of Eco to over 35 countries globally. New international locations will be shared in the future on the i-Tree website.
