Launch of new Scottish Poverty & Inequality Research Unit (SPIRU) 

As child poverty rises and inequalities widen, both the need and the opportunity to address these twin challenges have never been greater in Scotland. The Scottish Poverty and Inequality Research Unit (SPIRU) at Glasgow Caledonian University was launched on 20 Mar 18. The new Unit builds upon the legacy of the Scottish Poverty Information Unit, founded at GCU in 1995. SPIRU brings together researchers from across GCU working on different aspects of poverty and inequality research. Read more…

 

Segment the Sector

Private polling by SCVO reveals 1 in 4 Scots no longer trust charities – research that was conducted prior to the scandals that have hit Oxfam and Save the Children so it’s fair to assume the situation will have worsened. SCVO has launched a campaign - I Love Charity – in a bid to repair some of the damage but once trust has been lost it’s so much harder to recover. These mega-charities have absolutely nothing in common (other than OSCR) with the many thousands of small, community based charities and it is important that these distinction are made loud and clear.  …Read more

GDPR Helpline

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched a dedicated advice line to help small organisations prepare for a new data protection law.  The phone service is aimed at people running small businesses or charities and recognises the particular problems they face getting ready for GDPR.  There are resources on the ICO website to help organisations employing fewer than 250 people prepare for the GDPR. But this new phone line will offer additional, personal advice to small organisations that still have questions.  To contact the helpline call 0303 123 1113 and select option 4 to be diverted to staff who can offer support. Scottish Attainment Challenge & Partnerships with the Third Sector

A guidance document was recently launched to support schools to develop effective partnership with the third sector. One of the Scottish Attainment Challenge's primary levers for change is recognised as being partnership work with families and communities and it is here that the third sector can be of particular value. The guidance identifies resources and provides examples of how schools can work collaboratively to create and identify purposeful partnerships with third sector organisations. Read more...

A school in Renfrewshire has won a prestigious award for its pioneering work helping children with their reading and writing. St Anthony's Primary has been named UK Literacy School of the Year - the first time the prize has gone to a Scottish school. Read more…

Safe Children: we've got this!

Child Safety Week runs from 4th to 10th June 2018 with the aim of reducing the numbers of Scottish children killed or seriously injured by accidents.  This is why it is so beneficial to register for a FREE Child Safety Week pack.
