Students at New York Medical College held a Parks and Recreation themed "Galentine's Day" Card Making Event last month. They made Valentine's Day card kits for friends and families of patients at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital so that they could make hand-made cards for their loved ones.

Students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center held their annual MS3 Student Panel. AMWA members from the third year class volunteered to spend a night with MS1 and MS2 students answering questions on clinical rotations and USMLE Step 1. Pictured below: student volunteers sitting on the panel.
University of California San Diego students held a bake sale last month to raise money for Days for Girls, this year's Interregional Service Project. They raised an incredible $711.60! If you would like to support Days for Girls, you can donate directly through Venmo at @AMWAstudent. Pictures from the bake sale are shown below.
Underrepresentation of Women in Plastic Surgery

Despite comprising half of all medical school graduates, women make up only one third of plastic surgery residents. Roughly three quarters of female medical students report losing interest in surgery during medical school, a significantly higher proportion than their male counterparts.

As part of an effort to assess the factors resulting in under representation of women in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, an IRB-approved survey (link below) has been developed to further understand the specialty decision-making of female medical students. The information gathered will be used to inform efforts to improve representation and diversity in plastic surgery. We hope that you will take the opportunity to respond and share your perspective with us.

The survey is designed to take 5-10 minutes and can be accessed here.
If you have any questions, please email Jason Green at jason.l.green@duke.edu.

Hilary Friedlander
Secretary

It has been my pleasure to serve as your National Student Secretary this year. Every month I am blown away by your commitment to promoting women in medicine through your creative events, inspiring initiatives, and motivational stories. Thank you for allowing me to share them. Best of luck to everyone in the upcoming Match!
Hilary is a fourth-year medical student at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. She received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Emory University in 2011 and spent the next three years completing her pre-medical post-baccalaureate certificate at Hunter College in New York City. Hilary served as the president of Einstein's AMWA Chapter followed by Region 2 Director, PATH Education Co-Chair, and most recently as a member of the Executive Committee in her role as Secretary. Her work with AMWA has led to a pilot research project to assess the effectiveness of different educational modalities in introducing sex trafficking education in to medical school curricula. She is a hopeful Ob/Gyn resident and has her fingers crossed for the upcoming match.
Please consider supporting the 2017-2018 Interregional Project, Days for Girls, by donating through Venmo at @AMWAstudent
