A key need that the YouthBuild program fills is connecting disconnected out-of-school youth to the continuing education they need for future success. The youth served in YouthBuild, Opportunity Youth, have dropped out of traditional schooling for a variety of reasons but most importantly, because the traditional school setting was not effective in meeting their learning needs. It’s important that YouthBuild programs recognize the important role they play in assisting these youth to attain high school credentials by being responsive to the diverse learner needs of YouthBuild participants. YouthBuild programs have to fill the gap for the youth they serve by assisting learners to connect to what they’re learning in a way that is interactive, engaging, and effective. ~ Jenn Smith, National YouthBuild Director, U.S. Department of Labor
