We are pleased to announce Julie Turconi appointed to a new position being piloted called Francophone Outreach Coordinator/Coordonatrice des relations francophones. She introduces herself  and her role, in French, in this March newsletter and will have a regular ‘column’ directed to our Francophone members. Julie can be reached in English or French at contactFR@storytellers-conteurs.ca And, look for her contributions in French to SC-CC’s social media!

Dear Member Organizations of SC-CC,
I am so pleased to announce we now have 30 memberships of guilds and groups supporting storytelling in different locations across Canada. Your membership support is much appreciated behind SC-CC’s work of service to support the art of storytelling for artists and communities. We will continue to outreach to the Territories and PEI for group memberships - for now, we are linked to individual storytellers in those regions, which is great.
If you wish to circulate flyers about Conference 2018 to your members, there are two versions from which you can use below. Both versions are bilingual:

The Conference Planning Team and the Indigenous Advisory Council are excited with what has evolved as strong opportunities for professional training and networking for all levels of storytellers and story listeners at Conference 2018.
Each group or guild may delegate one individual from their membership to attend conference at the early bird special price and as voting member on that guild or group’s behalf at the AGM on Saturday and Sunday morning. Please contact Cristina via email (admin@storytellers-conteurs.ca) to let us know who your chosen delegate is, and have that delegate register for conference here. If the delegate is also an individual member, they will have two votes on any motions proposed - one for their group or guild and one for themselves.
Some member organizations have expressed interest in sharing different approaches where local membership benefits are concerned. This includes how a local group or guild is organized, what kinds of sample promotional materials exist, how policy and procedures are developed, and other aspects involved in successfully running a local organization such as the history of a local organization: how it got started, what its mandate might be, milestones achieved and what/ how leadership roles have developed. Let us know if you would like to be part of the networking on these questions, and whether your organization would be able to being sample materials to display at the conference; the aim is to develop a focus group on these questions for discussion at conference.

We look forward to your news about World Storytelling Day activities, to be posted in the March and May newsletter editions before many of us meet face to face at conference in July 5 to 8, in Peterborough, Ontario at Trent University.

L’équipe de planification du congrès et le Conseil consultatif autochtone sont fiers des excellentes opportunités de formation professionnelle et de réseautage qui seront offertes, lors du congrès 2018, aux participants de tous les niveaux, conteurs ou auditeurs.
Chaque groupe ou organisme peut inscrire un de ses membres au congrès au tarif préférentiel de préinscription; cette personne représentera le groupe ou l’organisme et aura, à ce titre, droit de vote au nom de celui-ci lors de l’AGA du samedi et du dimanche matin. Merci de communiquer le nom de ce délégué à Cristina par courriel ( admin@storytellers-conteurs.ca), et de suivre ce lien pour son inscription au congrès. Si votre délégué est aussi membre de SC-CC à titre individuel, il pourra voter deux fois sur chaque proposition : une fois au nom de son organisme, l’autre en son propre nom.
Certains organismes membres se sont dit intéressés à partager différentes approches concernant les avantages accordés aux membres au niveau local, y compris en abordant des questions telles que l’organisation du groupe ou de l’organisme, le type de matériel promotionnel existant, le développement des politiques et procédures et tout autre aspect déterminant d’une gestion réussie, comme le contexte historique de l’organisme (ses débuts, son mandat, ses événements marquants et le développement des postes de direction). Dites-nous si vous aimeriez participer aux réflexions de groupe sur ces questions. Indiquez-nous également si votre organisme pourrait amener des exemples de matériel promotionnel à montrer lors du congrès. Nous aimerions créer un groupe de discussion lors du congrès.

Hello Fellow Members of SC-CC,
I'm a member and am pleased to report that I have a new book out. It's a collection of 13 of my recitations and has been published by Runningthegoat Press in Tors Cove NL. Marnie Parsons is the publisher. Below is some information and a jpeg of the cover. (These are spoken word stories I do from memory. Marnie thought they would make a good book).
The world of Dave Paddon’s recitations is quirky, riotously funny, and utterly unique; a place of tall tales and plain foolishness, where fog is so thick you can use it for cannonballs, and a polar bear hijacks a bingo tournament. Berry pickers turn combatants and the result is a bay full of jam; a local handyman turns doctor and uses the spare parts in his shed to patch up his neighbours.
Half the Lies You Tell Are Not True brings together thirteen recitations long loved by Paddon’s many local fans. Great for older kids and grown-ups alike, this is a wonderful cross-over book.  Paddon has been called Newfoundland and Labrador’s Robert Service, and for good reason. His recitations are non-stop fun, fully engaging the verve and tang of the province’s rich language. (The book has a glossary at the back for those from up-along.) These were written to be recited, and readers will surely find themselves reading aloud to family and friends.
Duncan Major’s illustrations capture the energy and wit of the recitations. While this is Major’s first trade publication, he and Paddon have collaborated on several letterpress chapbooks featuring Paddon’s recitations and Major’s artwork; they are a perfect pairing.
Recitations included: "The Fog", "Doctoring", "Dirty Job", "Flying", "Vessels", "Tunnel", "Berries", "Supernan", "Bingo Bear vs Supernan", "Man Cold", "The Weather in Town", "Hockey Night in Labrador", and "Man of La Manche".

A History of the Storykeeper Award Prize

I would like to begin this story by offering heart-felt thanks to both Selina Eisenberg and Dinny Biggs and associated Board members who spent many unexpected hours trying to sort out the mess that our Storykeeper Award Committee created by blithely offering lifetime memberships to the winners of the award, without considering the consequences to SC-CC.
When the committee was first established in Montreal, in 2012, we were given carte-blanche and told that now that we had our committee, we could proceed. At that time there was a surplus in the SC-CC budget and there was a sense of urgency that it had to be spent some way. What better way than by offering lifetime memberships to the recipients of the award?

Ma petite histoire du prix Gardien(ne) des contes

J’aimerais commencer par adresser de sincères remerciements à Selina Eisenberg et Dinny Biggs, ainsi qu’aux membres du conseil d’administration concernés, qui ont passé de nombreuses heures imprévues à tenter de remédier au problème créé par notre comité du prix Gardien(ne) des contes lorsqu’il a allègrement offert l’adhésion à vie aux gagnants du prix, sans penser aux conséquences pour SC-CC.
Le comité a été créé en 2012 à Montréal. À l’époque, on nous avait donné carte blanche et dit que, puisque nous avions maintenant notre propre comité, nous pouvions passer à l’action. SC-CC affichait alors un excédent budgétaire et il semblait urgent de trouver comment dépenser cet argent. Quoi de mieux que d’offrir l’adhésion à vie aux récipiendaires du prix?

CALL FOR PROPOSALS:
2018-2019 Speaking Out Season & Special Features
OST [Ottawa Storytellers] is interested in receiving proposals for new storytelling show ideas and remounted works from its members and beyond. We welcome proposals from storytellers representing different cultural traditions, backgrounds and experiences.
Submit a proposal yourself or let a storyteller you admire know about our call for proposals and encourage them to apply!
Complete shows should be approximately 90-minutes long, allowing for an intermission. You are welcome to propose a shorter work to be paired with another/others in a full 90-mintue program. Not all proposals will be programmed, but all proposals will be considered. The Speaking Out Season consists of 7 shows that will run from December 2018 to June 2019. OST Special Features are programmed for the fall season of 2018 and 2019.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: MARCH 31, 2018.

Seventh Annual Canadian Storytelling Night – Soirée nationale du conte
Prepare to immerse yourself. Water is the deep subject and theme of 2018’s Canadian Storytelling Night-Soirée national du conte (CSN-SNC), spreading out across the country on November 3.
Plunge into this year’s event: Running Deep – The Power of Water.
Canadian Storytelling Night–Soirée nationale du conte in late fall gives storytelling groups a reason to gather at the turn of the year when the nights grow longer and colder, a traditional time to meet around a fire or move indoors and start a winter’s storytelling season. It can be held as a companion event to World Storytelling Day in March, another event supported across the country by Storytellers of Canada-Conteurs du Canada.

Courants profonds - Le pouvoir de l'eau
Septième soirée annuelle de contes canadiens - Soirée nationale du conte
Préparez-vous à vous immerger. L'eau est le sujet et le thème profond de la Soirée-conte nationale du conte (CSN-SNC) canadienne de 2018, qui s'étend à travers le pays le 3 novembre.
Plongez dans l'événement de cette année: Courants profonds - Le pouvoir de l'eau.
La Soirée nationale du conte qui a lieu à la fin de l'automne donne aux groupes de conteurs et conteuses une raison de se rassembler au tournant de l'année quand les nuits deviennent plus longues et plus froides, un moment traditionnel pour se réunir autour d'un feu. Il peut être tenu comme un événement parallèle à la Journée mondiale du conte en mars, un autre événement soutenu partout au pays par les SC-CC.

Request for a Storyteller to Volunteer
for a Voice-over for
Documentary on the History of the Canadian Maple Leaf Flag
We are in search of a passionate storyteller to do the voice-over in our proposed “History of the Canadian Maple Leaf Flag” documentary.
“We are working toward a timeline in the summer months for the initial work to be completed. The documentary will be in the form of a 27 to 35 minute video which will tell the story of the details of exactly who and how our Canadian Maple Leaf Flag became the National Flag of Canada through the research completed over the past 7 years. The work of the voiceover will be critical in bringing a professional tone to the exhaustive information.” Robert J (Bob) Harper, Executive Director - Canadian Flag Education Centre.
Travel expenses to Brockville, Ontario and a per diem will be provided. Although this is a volunteer position, expenses related to bringing the volunteer to the recording location will be provided.

The Director of the Toronto Storytelling Festival, Dan Yashinsky writes...
A bit of the Toronto Storytelling Festival's creation story ... I have to take you back to Kensington Market, 1978, and we're in a little cafe called Gaffer's. I had started telling stories there on Friday nights, and it slowly turned into an open storytelling session. My main partner-in-stories was Joan Bodger, who came almost every week. So did Carol McGirr, Alice Kane, Celia Lottridge, Charly Chiarelli, and other storytelling pioneers. Joan and I struck up a conversation about how the Friday night storytelling community was ready for a larger format, and out of that discussion came the idea for a festival. That first festival took place, rather appropriately, on April 1, 1979. 
We were convinced back then that storytelling was the most necessary and nobly subversive artform that our crazy times called for. I'm still convinced. Storytellers embody the values that may allow human culture to emerge from this strange moment of history, when we think we can double-click on memory and have more ways to communicate than things to say. The dream of a contemporary storyteller is to use this marvelous art, based on wonder and reverie and voice and memory, to remind our fellow-citizens that a story told and heard at the right moment can change everything. And that vision has been part of every storytelling festival in Toronto, and indeed around the world, since this renaissance began.

Bonjour à tous,
Je me présente : Julie Turconi, conteuse et artiste. Je suis la toute nouvelle Coordonnatrice des relations francophones de SC-CC.
Certains d'entre vous me connaissent déjà, car j'œuvre dans l'ombre pour SC-CC depuis plusieurs années (traduction de documents). J'ai aussi écrit des articles et des rapports bilingues pour l'infolettre, il y a longtemps. Je connais donc bien l'organisme.
Aujourd'hui, je suis chargée de développer les relations de SC-CC avec les Francophones de tout le Canada. Autrement dit, je suis là pour vous!
N'hésitez pas à m'écrire à l'adresse contactFR@storytellers-conteurs.ca pour partager vos questions, vos doutes, vos frustrations, vos idées, vos envies, vos coups de gueule, vos coups de cœur, etc.
Ce poste de coordination des relations francophones est tout nouveau, mes tâches évolueront donc au fil de mes interactions avec vous et avec les communautés francophones de partout au Canada. Le but est de développer, ensemble, un organisme fort au niveau national, dans les deux langues officielles, qui serve les conteurs au mieux de leurs intérêts. Car l'union fait bien la force.
Pour me présenter rapidement, je suis conteuse-effeuilleuse de vie depuis une douzaine d’années, écrivaine publiée (nouvelles, roman, chroniques poétiques, haïkus), artiste visuelle, artiste martiale (karaté, Qi Gong et enfin Tai Ji, que j'enseigne), énergéticienne, créatrice de cosmétiques 100% naturels, et j’en oublie sûrement!
Bref, je suis une femme éclectique, passionnée, motivée… et en tant que travailleuse autonome, je me dois d’utiliser les outils de promotion et de marketing qu’offrent les médias sociaux. Je ferai donc bénéficier SC-CC de mes connaissances, que je continuerai à approfondir en parallèle.

Festival interculturel du conte de Montréal
 La 14ème édition du Festival interculturel du conte de Montréal s’est terminée en beauté le 29 octobre 2017 avec le Marathon du conte, spectacle de clôture rassemblant 33 artistes de la parole d’ici et d’ailleurs venus témoigner de la diversité et de la pertinence de l’art du conte en 2017. Cette édition a accueilli 70 artistes, proposant 66 activités dans 43 lieux très variés sans mentionner les activités de médiation culturelle, les résidences et les représentations scolaires. Vingt-deux organisateurs, diffuseurs et journalistes culturels du Québec, du Canada et de l’étranger ont été présents sur le Festival, et nous avons accueilli plus de 7000 membres du public pendant dix jours remplis de découvertes et de rencontres exceptionnelles.
Nous avons eu la chance cette année d’avoir comme porte-parole du FICM Chloé Sainte-Marie et Joséphine Bacon, deux grandes dames de lettres. Elles ont présenté lors de la soirée d’ouverture et la soirée Paroles autochtones en partage des prestations fortes et émouvantes témoignant d’une conversation entre deux cultures, deux nations, deux identités qui s’affrontent et se réconcilient.
Six artistes internationaux parmi les plus grands artistes de la parole dans le monde ont foulé nos scènes pendant les dix jours du Festival avec des spectacles aussi variés que jouissifs. Passant d’une parole traditionnelle à des formes éclatées, revisitant avec brio les textes classiques, réinventant sans cesse la parole conteuse, faisant rire, pleurer et réfléchir le public soir après soir, l’excellence de leurs prestations a montré de façon définitive que le conte est un art à part entière au même titre que les autres arts de la scène et qu’il se porte fort bien en 2017.
Le FICM a tenu cette année à donner la parole à des artistes de la diversité qui racontent sur scène des histoires qu’on a besoin d’entendre. Grâce à un nouveau partenariat avec la BAnQ les publics ont pu visionner des films de Wapikoni Mobile qui donnent la parole aux jeunes autochtones, participer à une conférence causerie sur le conte autochtone aujourd’hui et écouter des artistes rarement entendus, dont le grand conteur de tradition innue Charles-Api Bellefleur qui a livré en Innu les récits fondateurs de sa culture avec traduction simultanée de la grande Joséphine Bacon. L’ovation spontanée du public à la fin de ce spectacle émouvant témoignait de l’importance de cette parole aujourd’hui. Sur d’autres scènes, les artistes exploraient la réalité LGBTQ, souvent mise à l’écart dans l’art du conte, ainsi que la condition féminine telle que vue par trois artistes conteurs dont un homme. L’histoire de la jupe d’Alberto Garcia Sanchez, qui raconte avec humour comment on ne reprise plus les jupes comme avant, car maintenant on reprise les femmes, est déjà devenue un classique et représente un moment fort de l’édition 2017.
« J’aimerais découvrir toutes les villes comme vous m’avez fait découvrir Montréal ce soir » nous a confié une touriste française en visite à Montréal pour le FICM. Cinq artistes exceptionnels ont raconté Montréal sous toutes ses coutures. Navigant entre douleur et fierté, les artistes nous ont fait découvrir les paroles des autochtones, les irlandais fuyant la famine pour s’établir sur nos terres, l’amitié entre un Écossais anglophone et un Québecois sans abri dans les rues de Montréal et, moment d’une beauté exceptionnelle, un texte de Nadine Walsh rendant hommage aux femmes anonymes, les Elles, qui ont construit dans l’obscurité la ville que nous connaissons aujourd’hui, le tout ponctué par les anecdotes savoureuses et l’harmonica endiablé d’Alain Lamontagne, petit gars de Verdun.
Le volet Rencontres proposait cette année trois conférences-causeries, trois rencontres avec des artistes en résidence, un micro-libre, trois classes de maître, une projection de court-métrages et des médiations culturelles avec les jeunes du primaire et du secondaire leur permettant de découvrir l’art du conte.
Tous les soirs, les artistes internationaux se mêlaient aux artistes d’ici, aux organisateurs et diffuseurs, aux publics et aux bénévoles dans des fin de soirées mémorables au restaurant Le Beaufort, quartier général du FICM. À l’image du conte, ces moments de rencontre démocratiques, festifs et inclusifs montraient que le projet humain au cœur du FICM s’étend au-delà des scènes et s’infiltre dans la vie de tous ceux et celles qui s’intéressent à notre art.

At the time of this writing, the storytelling scene in Montreal has been pretty quiet, with just the regular swap evenings taking place and no special events were planned for Valentine’s Day.
However, in the Eastern Townships, two storytellers collaborated on a four-part workshop that was organized by Kathryne Owen (the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Lennoxville and District Women’s Centre) under a City of Sherbrooke cultural initiative called “Culture du Coeur”.
Ena Greyeyes (who will be presenting a workshop at the upcoming Peterborough SC-CC conference in July) and Ann Rothfels, were invited to participate in the first two phases of this exciting project. The two met with the organizers in January to plan the event and then the two met again at a café to further refine and then submit their proposal. For Ann, it was her first extended time being with Ena, and she found the encounter to be both stimulating and educational, as Ena shared some of her life story and her philosophical approach to life as they planned.
On Wednesday, January 31, the two storytellers presented their first workshop to a local group of seniors, known as the OWLS (Outstanding Wise Ladies Sharing). There were about 30 women present and Ena was able to share a story she had written about a despairing young man whose encounter with a snake helps to change his life-direction and she shared the importance of colour and emotion in her Cree storytelling tradition. Ann provided a more general introduction to storytelling and by bringing in evocative objects, was able to draw out some personal stories from the participants.
The next phase of the workshop took place in Lennoxville, at the Uplands Cultural and Heritage Centre, on Monday, February 12, where a delicious lunch was provided for the storytellers, organizers and the four seniors who were committed to writing and then telling, their own stories. After the luncheon, Ena and Ann, working with a group of two each, mentored the women in their writing and then guided them through their first storytelling experience. There was much laughter and encouragement during this process.
At a later date, the four senior women will perform their stories to children in a local playgroup and then to a group of intellectually disabled youth, and Kathryne will then preside over an art workshop where the listeners will draw or paint images of wha t they had seen as they listened to the stories.
It was exciting for Ena and I to be involved in such an all-encompassing project and we were touched by the appreciative comments we received from both the participants and the organizers of this project loosely called “Storytelling Journey”.
